2nd Pursuit Squadron, AVG P-40E
« on: January 20, 2014, 05:52:06 PM »
I know we already have a beautiful 23rd FG P-40E but is it possible to have our old AVG skin for the P-40E?

I really dig the Chinese star on AVG aircraft. Plus, I'm a Panda Bears fan  :D

or the camo from the old AVG days as it became the 23rd FG

Is it possible to have someone reskin these or do another AVG P-40E?

Shouldn't AVG skins go on the P-40B?

I believe they had P-40E's before July 1942 which is when they were disbanded. I know a few pilots like Tex Hill used the E but I'm not sure of the time frame and whether or not they used the Chinese star or the US. The book "FLYING TIGERS: Claire Chennault and his American Volunteers" mentions on a number of occasions the P-40E before July and as early as March after they left Rangoon but he often just says P-40 in other passages and it becomes difficult to tell how many they had and which squadrons or pilots used them and when.

Here's a profile (I know they aren't always correct but it might help).

I believe this is a real photo (I may be wrong) but the Chinese stars are on the wings if you look close enough

These are "Flying Tigers" but also belong to the 23rd Fighter Group but notice that some still have the nice camo scheme

Color shot not real AVG.  That's the Confederate Air Force Airsho' in the mid 70s.  Third from the camera  (#26) is the CAF's Warhawk now painted in a ghastly scheme similar to the second (Tex Hill) color plate you posted.

Shouldn't the roundels be a darker blue?

Maybe they should, do you have any info on them? Anything would help.. Tks.

This is all i could find on the web, for a darker colour. The lighter ones I got from a book, but its a bit difficult to verify. Is that better?

Thanks Lyric, my impression from the 2nd link is that the original version of the colour of the star is correct. They all seem fairly light. Your thoughts?

If you scroll down to the halfway point you can see the star on the wing. Which I think is the more correct colour.

According to Simmers Paint Shop, Chinese Medium Royal Blue (I think the most likely color) would have and RGB of: 0, 117, 170 which looks like this:

Viewing from my end the roundel looks to be aqua or teal it is not blue at all in the first post you made.
