Whacked view settings
« on: January 22, 2014, 09:18:54 AM »
I very much would like to stay with Aces High but my view settings are making it hard.........
I am running an iMac through Crossover which I'm sure doesn't help.

I've been able to calibrate some views on the hatswitch but they are offset:
Controller Input Right Back gives me Right View Mode Function and goes around the horn to
Controller Input Left Forward giving me Left View Mode Function.
This offset then creates a problem setting the front level and up views.
It does go back to the forward view when the hat switch is untouched.

I've tried many "custom" settings including trying to continue the offset
but I'm getting nowhere.

The same stick (Saitek Cyborg 3D Gold) worked fine in Warbirds so I don't think it's that.

Has anyone experienced anything similar?
I'd appreciate any help sent my way.
Thanks!

I have no feel for how well the game will do using Crossover.  Typically, Apple user use BOOTCAMP and install a copy of Windows to play the game.

Hopefully some of the Apple users will chime in here.

Ah yes, I've run into you quite a few times over my flight sym years. Nice to do it again and thanks for
replying.

I'm not sure I want to go the BootCamp/Windows way. I hope
there's some Apple chiming too.

Thanks Skuzzy. Hopefully see ya around the arenas.

I might move this to the "Hardware and Software" forum as it gets more traffic from Apple users than this forum does.  We can give it a bit of time.

Hope to see you around the arenas.

Crossover/Wine Bug 18424

Been unfixed since 2009 so I wouldn't hold my breath  :rock

Some users reported a conflict with a Microsoft USB keyboard being misdetected as a joystick. Perhaps you could try a different keyboard to see if that fixes your hat  :noid

Thanks Mr. Ripley.

I'm using the Mac usb keyboard that came with the iMac some years ago. I'll try another if I can come across one.

I'm so close....Key mapping, 75% of the views and all three axis (including the twist stick I sometimes use) seem to be functioning fine.

I'm also noticing framerate issues in a busy battle. I'm afraid the obstacles to remaining in AH are mounting.

You could try running windows in virtualbox or parallels. Parallels used to have pretty good performance but I never tried games with it.

Again.....thanks much for your input Mr. Ripley.

I'm googling the hell out of this for VM comparisons and feedback. Parallels shows promise as does VirtualBox (free) but
this may get too complicated for my digitally disadvantaged brain.
I also have the Windows purchase to consider. I may be able to get Windows 7 Home for free but have seen on this site that
XP is preferred.

XP used to be preferred. Now you would be recommended to get Win7 x64 instead. But on virtual machine and If you restrict your use only for games XP might actually be a good option.

Windows 7 64 bit is the preferred operating system now.  Windows XP w/SP3 is fine as well.

I thank you guys for sending me in the right direction.
Bootcamp and Win 7 and I'm there. Almost scary how well it went.
Just making most of the minimum requirements running 32 bits with a ATI Radeon HD2400
video card with only 128 MB VRam.
I have to go bare bones to get good fps but so far so good.

Do I sound like I know what I'm talking about? Almost.

I thank you both kindly. See ya around the not so friendly skies.

Glad to hear you got it sorted out.  Yes, 128MB of video RAM is really too low to play with any of the advanced graphic options enabled.  You should be able to run with "Detailed Water" enabled though.

Thanks Skuzzy. I'll be fiddling with it to see how graphic I can get.
