As I'm reluctantly looking at the market for a possible AH replacement I have a question: How suitable is this game for the proverbial lone wolf player? I have never ever joined a AH squad, and I would avoid any game were had to join any squad/clan/alliance for 'success' and enjoyment.
And how important are reflexes/reaction time? I'm not getting any younger and am already kinda avoiding furballs in here because I find them exhausting me quickly...  :uhoh

Game play is pretty simple, its all Click to fire, Click to move. You don't fly the ship really, you just direct it where you want to go. Reaction times are not that important for alot of the game. Large battles do require some quick thinking and to know when to get the hell out of there. But you can be a miner in a .4-.6 sector and just let your drones deal with the defense (if you make sure you deploy them when you arrive there).

It is a different type of game for sure. Everything in game is player made (almost). You can set yourself up as a miner, an explorer, a bounty hunter, a trader... really alot of options. As to Corps never been in one except the starting one. I just stayed in the starter corp as they can provide help and answer questions as EVE has some deep mechanics.

Lusche,

Expanding on BluBerry's and Fish42's comments, you can play lone wolf. I dabbled in a little bit of pirating for a brief time and it was extraordinarily fun while I did it. In my experience, I have had the most fun in the game when I played with people I know. A two or three man pirate roam can yield a ton of profit if you fly well together.

If you like tactics, teamwork, rock paper scissors style of fighting then you may enjoy the game.

On a plus side, there are lots of charts and graphs to look at too!

Yes, it is almost "spread-sheets online".

As I'm reluctantly looking at the market for a possible AH replacement
I am checking out Star Trek Online. The ship combat there is not bad - a bit like naval combat with slow maneuvering to bring your front or broadside to bear, some special moves to click, and fiddling with energy management between the weapons, shields, engines and aux systems. Plus I get to do my William Shatner impression when I read the text as my character :) You dont have to do that though, you can also do it like Patrick Stewart...

Mosquito VI - twice the spitfire, four times the ENY.

Click!>> "So, you want to fly the wooden wonder" - <<click!
the almost incomplete and not entirely inaccurate guide to the AH Mosquito.

So I'm curious. I was playing around with my scanner probes and I found an "unstable wormhole". Is it worth entering it or should I stay away from it?

All wormholes are technically "unstable". If you enter the wormhole, make sure that you bookmark the wormhole from the other side as it will usually collapse within a day or two. If you happen to be stuck in wormhole space, you can just use your scanners to find another wormhole as an exit. Just beware, you won't always be the only capsuleer venturing in wormhole space. I've ventured there a few times and even lost a ship to other players.

If you want to have the most fun, don't be afraid to take a risk and lose a ship.

When you say bookmark it, do you mean add it to my personal location?

and if I do that, and it collapses, your saying I can just go back to where the wormhole was?

No, if it collapses while you're inside you'll have to scan down a new exit which will come out somewhere else. But as long as you have probes you can never be stuck in a wormhole.

And if you don't have probes and no one to save you, self destruct your pod.

I've been playing on and off for a couple years. I really want to get into it, but I cant. It is too confusing, and since I literally fly as a lone wolf I find that I'm very very easy meat for more expierenced players.  I can fly a battleship in EVE, but I can not figure out how to really afford one.  Even if I did have one I'm not certain I would be able to do much with it because I'm at a loss as to where to use it.  I'm eyeing Star Citizen as my space sim fix.  That so far appears to be much closer than EVE for what I envision.

Thanks for your opinions guys.
I downloaded it and started trial a few days ago. So far it's been... interesting.

It's definitely HUGE and complex, with very much to learn and to discover. Can certainly can keep someone occupied for years with all the possibilities - which is a plus for me personally. I also see it's a huge time sinker as well - which is a negative for me. While the skill system as such doesn't require much online time (no skill grinding), all the toys and stuff you gotta need absolutely does. Especially when trying to go lone wolf... which the game, after my first impressions (maybe 40 hours so far) isn't really suited for. Everything outside HighSec is more like a 3rd world country civil war zone... without a lot of friends (and prime equipment) you better seem to keep a very low profile.  Equipment (mainly) and numbers trump personal skill way more than in AH.
One advantage for me personally is that I don't have to stay up to 2-5 am to see any decent activity, I can log in at any time of the day and see action, if I want to.

So I'm not sure yet if this is something for me... the 'time sink' aspect and the ultimate difficulty to really go lone wolf and yet still experience the whole universe are a turnoff. Maybe I can talk my wife into spending me an additional paid 'trial' month ;)

On a side note, even after such a short time I'm somewhat amazed how many people are treating that game like a second job: Spending a lot of $$ for secondary characters and PLEX, investing tremendous amounts of time per day in earning money in the most disciplined and efficient way possible and following detailed character skill plans for a year or more devised with tools like EveMon...

That is why I stay away from EvE. The people there are crazy.

I actually "own" a wormhole.  Have a class 3 wormhole with a POS (Player Owned Station, basically I own a space station in there complete with heavy defenses) in it.. I love when people try to come in.. love to kill em!

Been playing nonstop since 2005.

Done pretty much everything there is todo and I still love the game like nothing else.

Best times is a group of 6-10 good friends roaming through null sec space and attack anyone you want or dare to. PVP at its most fun. If you are good you get fights like this https://zkillboard.com/related/30000785/201402011800/

Remember EVE is a game where you don't get spoonfed like WoW. You need to set your own goals and enjoyment. EVE can be mindnumbingly boring or crazy exciting fun but its largely up to you and the choices you make on how you want to play the game.
