Computer Advise
« on: February 06, 2014, 05:16:38 PM »
Ive been out of AH for almost a year due to my computer not being able to hold up to the specs anymore. I was looking into getting a computer from best buy, but was wondering how it would hold up on AH.

There are 2 options i was looking at.

Computer 1: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/desktop-4gb-memory-1tb-hard-drive/1494231.p?id=1219052697656&skuId=1494231&st=pcmcat287600050002_categoryid$abcat0501000&cp=1&lp=5

Computer 2: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/desktop-8gb-memory-500gb-hard-drive/1494198.p?id=1219052700181&skuId=1494198&st=pcmcat287600050002_categoryid$abcat0501000&cp=1&lp=4

Thanks in advanced!

Both aren't terrible but their graphics cards are lacking. IIRC AH leans more on CPU than graphics, luckily...but doesn't work well with multi-core AMD processors as opposed to Intel.

You'll be told to build one yourself for the best results and it's probably the way to go really...you'll get better quality parts out of it and good experience with the inner workings of a computer. Although, something with a good graphics card will cost a bit more.

Because there are so many options when it comes to components, there are like a zillion ways to put together a PC, and lots of sites with advice.  Here's one site that I happen to - mostly - like:

http://www.maximumpc.com/build_pc_recommended_builds_december_2013

Check the "PC specs" link in my signature to see what I put together for my own use.

And remember, YMMV     ;)

The Video GPU that is listed for each of the 2 iBUYPOWER PCs you linked to are not dedicated Video Cards, they are both, built in to the AMD CPU listed for that particular PC

If you decide to purchase one of these Computers that you linked to, I recommend that you also by a dedicated Video Card, as well

As for Intel vs AMD, you should have no problems at all using either of these computers you linked to, for Aces High

my AMD 3.6 Ghz quadcore Phenom II CPU works just as good as my Intel i7-2600k, when playing Aces High....

the AMD works better for CAD, the Intel works better when I am doing video editing........ they both are about the same when I am doing music recording/tracking etc......

Hope This Helps

Good Luck

eh, correction, the one with 8gb of memory shows an nvidia gt-610 1gb graphics card...although it's a low end oem video card, it is not an embedded gpu.

Heya gyrene, I thought about that when I was researching the processors... but when I typed in that FX4200?  CPU  it popped up showing that gt-610  as one of the options..... I guess I should have researched it more thorough......

thanks for the heads up.

Uh, noooooooooooooo. . . Nothing AMD does better for CAD or video editing. If that was the case when someone tested systems then they used the wrong Intel system and even then I don't believe it's true.

Well Challenge, all I know from using both Intel and AMD in my work environmet when I was working doing Mechanical engineering, load calculations, designing HVAC and refrigeration systems from early 90's up through 2009/2010......... is that all the different computers I used...... The AMD systems ALWAYS smoked the Intel systems during use of AutoCAD, Energy Auditing and Load Calculation Software......

to each their own opinion I guess...... I know I am not the only one who has experienced the same thing I am claiming here........

as for Video Editing, Intel takes the win , most everytime in that department....

nothing to fret over though....... heck I am retired / disabled and don't even get to do that type of work anymore since late 2009/early 2010..... so I can not really say if anything has changed in the last several years whether Intel has caught up to AMD in that department or not.....

cheers

Sometimes some software does better with one brand versus the other, just the same as for video cards and games. I have not bought a card in couple years, but I would have to say the same applies. One brand versus the other brand cards of equal. Some do better with some games and software then the other brand.
I am not going to say one brand is better then another. To me its about what a person wants to use their computer for now and in the future and build or buy accordingly. Guess that's where the research comes in :o)
Never hurts for more then one opinion.

AMD and Intel are each better at some things than others. The game now is CPU intensive, but from what Skuzzy has said, when the new graphics come out, video card will be more important. Whatever you get, get something that has an independent video slot...then you can add your own card.
