Just Add Water!
« on: February 09, 2014, 12:50:10 AM »

I live in the sticks so I keep a supply of 'off grid' food around in case weather/zombie apocalypse screws me.

From time to time I have to go thru my survival food stores when they near expiration. Such was the case with my Bear Creek cheddar broccoli soup mix. I didn't have high expectations from a powdered soup mix, there's only so much you can do with what you have to start with.

Let me go on record as saying I was shocked just how great this soup was. Rich buttery/cheesy flavor, ample chunks of broccoli and a thick base. Hard to imagine anything better made from scratch and it only took me adding boiling water. Literally all you have to do is boil water.

I'm looking forward to trying the other Bear Creek soup mixes I have in my bugout pantry. If the rest of the flavors are half as good as this one, they're going to be awesome.
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.

We live in the sticks and under the shadow of a volcano. If an earthquake broke the levi on the lake, we'd be stranded (the road would be flooded, washed away) I don't like to have a plan where I wait for someone to save me, I prefer to be self-sufficient.

We have 30 days worth for 4 of us, a mix of Mountain House, MRE's and dry goods (Rice, Flour, Salt, Sugar-all either 20 lb or 40 lb bags) 500 gallons of water, 120 gallons of gasoline (for the generator) and about 5000 rounds of ammo.  :devil

I check rotation dates every year on 9/11. Gasoline gets rotated every 6 months into the motor home and vehicles. (it has stabilizer in it)

There once was a time where people thought I was nuts but now they have shows on TV that makes me look rather brilliant. :)

Been doing this since before 9/11/2001. Wife was the Disaster Coordinator at Harbor View for years and since her role was so important they came out with the National Guard to see where they could put a chopper down to pick her up if a major disaster happened, then they'd fly her back to Harbor View and land on the hospital's heli-pad.

yesterday I went to the local 7-11. some young black gang banger looking kid saw me walking up to the door, he stopped, held the door open and said "go ahead sir", a few years back kids like that would have slammed the door on my face.

perhaps rich you only see the worst due to your job, so you only expect the worst out of people.

I don't think it's the quality of the individual that we are talking about here, but how fragile society is as a system.  It won't take much to bring the whole thing down pretty quick.  Just think what would happen if the electric grid went down for only a few weeks.  Grocery stores would be empty, no traffic lights, ect.  Chaos.  in a desperate situation the worst in everybody can come out really quick.  Don't let your dad get punched over a can of soup.  :devil

see the thing is that is has happened several times in the past.  and society didnt break down and there wasnt any looting.  charlotte, nc was without power for several weeks back in the late 80's early 90's, i cant remember exactly,  due to a hurricane.

they had block parties where people cooked all the perishable food first for all the neighbors. there was no looting, no groceries.  heck some of the grocery stores gave away food that needed to be cooked right away or it would spoil.

after katrina, it was a different story.  but that was because people had basically nothing to do and all day to do it.  along with the lack of food and water.  then again several policemen were sent to prison for murdering people thinking they could get away with it.
