This A6M2 was part of the 2nd Koku Sentai. This squadron was usually based on the carrier Hiyo, but in early 1943 received orders to transfer to Buin airfield in the Solomons. The IJNAF were building up a large air armada in the Solomons for Operation I-Go, an aerial counter attack against American forces in the area. This operation went ahead in April but did little damage to the US forces and barely delayed their advance. While en-route to Buin the Hiyo's all-over grey painted aircraft were given additional top surfaces green camouflage paint in a variety of schemes.
