Hey guys this might seem pretty retarded because I always wondered how come the props on the plane doesn't get shot out. For example planes with guns like 190 or planes that has guns on the nose behind the props. How does the physics works. How come the bullets don't shoot the props out and break it lol. Hope someone can explain it.

Interruptor gear synchronizes the gun fire with prop rotation. Gun will fire only when the muzzle is clear. Invented during WWI. See : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synchronization_gear

Ok that's a really good invention. So if the plane is on the ground and the engine is off. If someone grabs the prop and turn it to block the guns, for instance put one blade to block one of the guns. Will the guns still fire or will it not.

If someone physically turns the prop with the engine off then the interrupter gear will block the gun from shooting the prop off. So with the engine off and a prop blocking the gun, the gun will never fire a single bullet.... at least that's what I suspect with my limited knowledge in it.

Furthermore, the guns or cannons on the wing do not require interrupter gears and if you stick a prop in front of one of them they will still fire.

Ok, but let's take this a step further.  The engine's not running.  I'm guessing unless there's a spectacular coincidence in the timing on the amount of time it takes a bullet to go from the gun muzzle to the spinning prop, the gun would actually be (edit: had the logic reversed) interrupted from firing at a point other than when the prop's dead in front of the gun under normal operation.  So, I'd expect the interruptor quite possibly might not be stopping firing if the prop were in front of it, engine off.

I think that's a pretty good explanation based on my knowledge!  I'll have to read more about it, because now I'm interested! lol

Well no the gun would not fire because the way they guns fires electronically. So if you turn on the power it will still prevent them from working.



Before they came up this system they sometimes would use a metal wedge mounted to the propeller.  That way is the bullet hit the wedge it was deflected away from the propeller in theory.. In real life it didnt always work.     They said it was better than fighting in the trenches but it wasnt any safer.
