Display options
« on: March 31, 2014, 09:49:27 PM »
I am in the midst of putting a rig together, and now I am at the point of figuring out my display.

At this point I have a 23" full HD monitor which does a nice job, but I am sure I could do much better. So I am looking at a the following options:

Just increase size my display with another, maybe upgrade to a 120 mHz or better refresh rate.

Go with a triple monitor surround setup, which would necessitate going with a lower end to keep costs down.

One for thought: Get a nice plasma HD TV and utilize it for a monitor

I have a budget of $1200 US to work with.

My question is really seeking opinions from you guys about your preference of display and why that is your preference. I appreciate your thoughts.

I would try 3 monitors. That system for one full-HD one is waaaaaay overkill, if you have spent like 1500$ on a puter, use its capabilities!

This is going to start an argument.

I have to point out that despite what you may have heard a 120Hz (not MHz) monitor is not really a good choice unless you just need that (3D or whatever). The problem is that if you are one of the lucky people that can distinguish between 60Hz and 120Hz refresh rates (everyone I know can with just a small amount of exposure to the difference) then you will not like the result. You are better off going for a larger monitor, or at least up to a point. I tried everything up to 32" monitors and finally settled on three 24" monitors. Your system can handle this easily and all you need are the monitors and the cables.

A couple of things to be aware of are that the larger the monitor becomes the easier it is to distinguish individual pixels. Since you have nearly 2,000 horizontally on each monitor it will not be much of a problem until you get a very large monitor. What does affect your view though is the span. If you intend to use three monitors then you need to think about peripheral extents. To some degree you can overcome view limitations by pushing the distance, but then you start to regret doing that when you are scanning for dots on the deck and other scenarios.

Smooth frame rates are more important than large numbers of frames, so don't be afraid to use vsync. Stick to the native vertical resolution whether you span three monitors in surround vision or not.

If you do go with three monitors get three of the same monitor. There are methods of using varying resolutions even, but they are not ideal solutions for Aces High especially.

...

Of course it is!   :lol

But not with me.  I have three 25-inch, 1920 x 1080 monitors ("PC specs" link, below).  Oddly enough, it took a bit of searching to find a good stand for three monitors, but I'm very happy with the one I found.

Before you buy any monitor check for reviews that have tested the input lag of your choice. Some monitors have large amounts of input lag which will negatively affect your aim in fast online games. The new models of Eizo (Foris for example) have a special control circuit that virtually eliminates input lag.

My eye site isn't the best. It's not horrible but I do wear glasses for up close and the monitor falls under that category.

3 monitors are easy to check out. Start the game, look forward left and take a screen shot, the same for forward right. Print them out at the size of your monitor and hang them along side your monitor. That's what it will look like.

I opted for a single screen. I have a 1080p HD 39 inch tv that I use. I have no ghosting, and spot dots 8K out with out a problem now where dots on the smaller screen were only spotted when an icon popped up. My screen is crystal clear and much easier to see what is going on.

Now you listen here, sonny boy...  I did order Track IR last week :aok  I haven't gotten it set up yet, though.

I have decided to go with the triple.  I ordered three of these>>>>http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824260174

I know I could have gotten a faster screen, but the bezel is what sold me.  In my mind, 8 ms isn't enough to concern me.  I am just not THAT serious.  Hopefully I will like it.

Now I have another question.  When I do get them, does the game support it?  Will I be able to have all three contiguos views up at the same time?

I was also wondering if it would be possible to run a fourth screen for the clipboard, radar, etc...

Instead of having your resolution set at 1620x1080 you'll set it to 4860x1080.  A forth screen for just the note pad won't work. The game only displays one screen at a time, no matter how big the screen is. The notepad opens in that one screen.

This screen has a very good input lag of only 4ms.

Corrected...

Since the monitors have the pivot function, you can also turn the monitors and set the resolution to 3240x1920 which would give you a little narrower view but following an enemy might be much easier.

Haven't I seen a picture of someone's desk with five pivoted monitors in an arched line?

It actually comes out to 5760 x 1080 and yes the system mentioned can handle that easily. You can also setup a forth monitor, but it will not be part of your gaming views. You will use three different cables to connect the monitors, so you will need the appropriate connectors DVI to HDMI or HDMI to HDMI, or DisplayPort to HDMI (for example).
