Gotta ask, with the number of times you've mentioned it...  How often has this happened to you?  Were you dead six on the guy flying straight at him, or something along those lines?  The way you talk it sounds like an everyday occurrence.

I got tagged by 999 at 1.5k once, and I was high and at his 3 o'clock.  Knocked my aileron off.  I went elsewhere.  Once, in years of buff hunting.

Yeah.  I am having trouble envisioning a scenario where you wouldn't get hit and all the guy'd need to do is just put his pipper vaguely out front of you.

As stated by glz, AI guns would be an option.  Or maybe gunning could only apply to the element you were inhabiting, not the whole formation, with multiple gunners allowed.  Either way, it'd be a pretty significant undertaking coad-wise.

Given that the separation on the formations would be as great as the convergence... I think fears over massive defensive lethality are somewhat unfounded unless some flew thru the formations from 5-7..........

Getting picked off at 1-1.5k would be little more likely than it is now........ IMO
