Hearing distant radio station or the like while playing AH?
« on: April 09, 2014, 01:05:01 PM »
This is not strictly an AH problem so I put it here.  A fellow squad member hears like a distant radio station when he plays AH.  His internet is off his cell phone using a modem.  His data allocation is being eat up by downloading and some uploading.

No virus no malware detected.  He has a separate laptop that is unaffected.

Any thoughts for me to pass on.

A google has found others with similar problem but no solution.

Sounds like a bot has been installed and using the computer as a distribution system.

Just a wild guess.

Thanks Skuzzy.  I will pass that on.

I had a similar problem a few years ago.  Kept hearing what sounded like a faint radio broadcast in the backround when I played.  Scanned my machine for any viruses or anything else that would cause it and it was driving me crazy for a few months.  The problem went away when I updated my sound pack, it turned out the previous sound pack I was using, the creator of the sound pack had somehow recorded a portion of someone's podcast he was listening to in the engine sound file.

I get similar but mine is something with my speaker system. Somehow it picks up radio stations (poor shielding?) and will just randomly be heard. It's happened with multiple systems, even multiple houses (NC & VA) and I've yet to find a way to make it stop short of a new speaker system. It's amusing at first, but holy hell is it annoying after 30 seconds. I get it outside of AH so if it only happens in AH it's likely not it, but may be worth noting.

Ack-Ack, thanks for the reply.  He uses the default sounds in AH.  Could have been though.  This is a strange one for sure.

1701E, it is coming in over the net for sure.  He can see it listed as an unidentified source.

That is interesting, I had a similar problem when I lived in East Hartford, Connecticut (home of Pratt Whitney). For some reason, all the radios in the house would suddenly pick up the air traffic controller just over the river. They would literally interrupt whatever I was listening to until the dialog ended. One moment, listening to music and the next I would hear aircraft designations and approaches.

One thing you need to ask is, where is the local radio station tower. If he lives within 1/4 mile of the tower, a 50,000 watt signal will be heard over a headset. A cheap way to block radio waves is with any type of metal screen that can be picked up in a hard ware store.

Also thinking about it you said he uses a cell phone as his modem. That may be the cause also. Some cell phone towers use existing towers and may be on the same tower as the radio station tower. The close proximity may be the culprit too.

Many things to consider too many to figure out without seeing everything.

Sometimes a bunch of cables attached to a same device and same mains may work as an antenna. I recall hearing Russian radio broadcasting from my guitar amp when I had a portable cassette player plugged in for recording/playback. The problem didn't occur if I used batteries, but did if I used a power transducer, so it was the amount of wiring and the mains circuit that caused it. Or something like that, my electric English is far from perfect.

He finally went to a past backup and restored the system to that.  Problem solved but never could finger what the cause.

Thanks everyone for brainstorm on the problem.
