In game tutorials.
« on: May 02, 2014, 11:52:22 AM »
Can we have ingame tutorials for new people? like its the first thing to pop up when a new persons enters a arena is a tutorial list. Maybe some videos from vudu15 and latrobe for some of the more advanced stuff. Too many people can't grasp the GUI and simply quit.
only a moron would use Dolby positioning in a game.

Along with interactive tutorials would be a big plus.  Stuff that guides you as you are in the plane trying to take off for the first time, drop a bomb, perform a basic maneuver.   I think most guys want to get in and fly right away instead of going out of game to look up the key command for toggling weapons, how drop a torp, how to use a tailhook, etc.

Tutorials are nice.  Individual instruction is even better.   :aok

Instruction is what most need to get better at the game for sure.

The kind of stuff that newbies would greatly benefit from is stuff like the first time they up heavy, they get a popup 'Hit backspace to select bombs, button 2 to release them.' and soforth, so they're not wondering how to do things.

While I do agree with this, trainers aren't always in the TA when newbies need them. Tutorials are something that new players can use at any time to gather the basics and do them over and over until they get the basics down. Without having to get a trainer, then if they want to go deeper and learn more, they can then contact a trainer (which could be mentioned at the end of the tutorial(s).)

Currently not having a tutorial of any kind, and leaving the newbie to the mercy of the community isn't a wise thing. The alt-f4 responses are old, and most know not to do them. But the enter x3 and other things, give the newbie even more frustration; and nothing to turn to when they need to learn something. Sure, there are a few in the community that would take the time to help them, but they aren't always there.

I think when the new engine is done, that HTC could make an in-depth tutorial and have it in sections for fighters, bombers, vehicles, guns -- the works. In the long run I think it would help HTC retain some customers.

I remember the last tutorial I did for an online game.  I had to do some and pass some "basic" instructions that were supposed to make it easier for me to enjoy the game.  after about 2 hours of trying to figure out what the heck the tutorial was trying to teach me, I quit and deleted the game.  some guys said it was pretty cool.  I never got to see it since passing the tutorials was required before you went online.

I don't think it should be required. That is annoying, especially if the controls are already familiar.  However, I think it would be nice to have a 'tutorial' button that would be on the clipboard from login to server screen (once inside an arena (unless the TA) there wouldn't be a tutorial button).  Then once you click on the tutorial button it categorizes the various tutorials, fighter, bomber etc.   Again, I agree that having a forced tutorial is a turn-off and should be avoided, but that doesn't mean HTC can't have a tutorial for their content.

Been playing for 6 1/2 years, and still am learning new things  :aok

Unskippable, hell no.  Having one would be a pretty good thing though.  I'd think something unobtrusive that basically told you the different commands you might want to do in the situation you're in might be good.  First time you up heavy, it tells you how to select and drop bombs.  Your plane is shot up and on fire, it tells you how to bail.  That kind of thing.  You get on a guy's six, it fills the screen with one of Bustr's explanations of mils and gunnery. ;)

Off topic but related. It would be nice if, when you DL the game, you also get the one page printable copy of the keyboard commands, or at least the option to DL it. Everyone needs it but most new players won't find it.

I think this is a great idea, but I think maybe only for the trial
Period? Thereby encouraging the player to seek a trainer?

A combination of ideas and a lil bit of spice from my own thoughts, would include:

  • a pop up menu when you click online
  • menu items to include challenges to complete for perks and achievements
  • menu items to cover basic control, chat, view, voice and important commands
  • menu items open drop down instructions along the clipboard (same as ".help" works presently)
  • the pop up menu is automatic for 2 week free subscription
  • after subscription, the pop up can be disabled/ enabled at will
