Fake Photo
« on: May 03, 2014, 04:47:05 PM »
This just sticks in my craw!  :furious What kind of a fool do they take us for?

Everyone knows that you have to land these birds with the X-foils in the closed cruise position. This is obviously a fake or doctored photo.

It may even be a Japanese plot!

Could have been a couple of things..

Hydraulics could have gone out on the wing controls or, which I think is most likely, judging form vent intake just below the port cockpit window, I do believe the Droid was one of the short-lived Win 8.04ce versions.  Nothing but bugs with that one..   Especially if you couldn't reach the touch-screen..

That would be possible but remember that fleet doctrine calls for a slow speed ditching alongside the picket destroyer whenever the X-foils cannot be retracted. This is because of the incident back in '39 when one tried to come aboard the Lexington all crippled up like this and tore the deck up and skidded into a packed group of Y-Wing fighters. It's been standard operating procedure ever since.

It's just hidden behind the fuselage, you can just make out the cannon of the lower-starboard wing.

S-Foil, man. S-foil

Also, I think this may be a model or mockup from early flight testing. The production X-wing was 41ft (12.5m) from the nose to the end of the main engines (that's larger than the Corsair). Using the deck crew as a comparison, this appears to be about a half-scale mockup.

Ahh.. but was this the ill-fated mission to deliver an emergency ration of  Illudium Phosdex in time for the Admiral's surprise inspection?

S-Foils, yes. Forgive me for not being nerdy enough to remember that. So If this is a half scale mock up why was it being flown in '42 off an escort carrier when full size production models were flying off of Lex and Sara as far back as 1937? Are they toying with the notion of a smaller X-Wing for jeep carrier service?

saxman are you for reals?  you have been around for a long time, it's called an X wing fighter because the wings are at an X.   the main wing in the picture intersects the main fuselage at an angle mostly  used by non-space fighters used in games like aces high and such.

this is like the first thing they teach us at the space academy or did you join the "planet national guard" and just fly land speeders  :rofl :rofl

I'm not aware of an attempt to build a scaled-down X-Wing. I did hear that the designers were working on a more compact fighter called the E-Wing, however this is still substantially larger than the craft in the photo (just about 36ft from nose to tail), and is also a wholly different design.

Now, the A-Wing Interceptor is about that size, but I haven't heard of them being deployed to the CVEs.

Get your facts straight, gun, and read my post more clearly: It's called an "S" foil short for "Strike." The B-Wing bomber has them as well.

dude look at the angle of the cockpit plus the fact that there's an r2d2 on top.  the S didnt have an r2d2, X wing did.  here's a picture from Wikipedia, notice the exact same shape except for the "level" wings which are clearly Photoshopped.

you can even see the red stripe from the cockpit all the way to the nose.

furthermore, this is the proof we needed that the x wing project was being kept from the general public.  notice how most of the sailors are trying to push the xwing overboard to cover up the crash, while 2 sailors are trying to stop the evidence from being thrown overboard.

Dude, I'm not saying S-WING, I'm saying S-FOIL. That's what each wing/engine/cannon assembly was called. The X-Wing had four S-foils, all attached to one another via a central motorized hinge joint.

:neener:
my bad i musunderstood your statement.  but the s foils wings do not move independent of each other since they were made primarily for space flight.  so basicallly you have 2 wings that move in an X type of configuration hence the X fighter rather than 4 wings moving independently.  what I mean for that in layman's terms is the "right upper" wing moves up or down at the same angle as the "left wing".  and we clearly see that one "upper wing" is missing.

take that planet national guard

Correct, they don't move independently of one another, as there's a central drive motor along the center of the fuselage occupying the space between the rear deck machinery and the fuel tanks in the belly. However all four foils are present. Both upper foils are clearly visible in the image. The lower-port foil is, as well. For the lower-starboard if you look very closely just below where the nose cone meets the fuselage you can see the tip laser cannon. It's kind of lost against the surface of the water, but it's that thin light-colored line that looks like it's sticking out from the netting along the side.
