I made an IBM parts delivery into a building at Moffet Field once near where one of those was parked. It had 12 guys with MP5 and M4 standing around it. They had a Humvee with more armed guards parked at the end of the runway where Highway 101 passes near. It probably had something to do with Onizuka and the Blue Cube. Those and variations were always coming and going from Moffet in the mid 90's.

If I had a gun with 3 bullets and I was locked in a room with Bin Laden, Hitler, Saddam and Zipp...  I would shoot Zipp 3 times.

If I remember right from a very long time ago, the plane was used to test different wing sweeps.

The big advantage over a conventional swing wing aircraft is that the CG doesn't change. You also don't run into wing synchronization issues. The wing box structure (where the wing attaches to the fuselage) can probably be made lighter as well.
