My New Toy

So it's been a hell of a week for me... Commissioning, bought myself a new phone and a fancy pen... and now I've replaced the motorcycle that was totaled a few weeks back when I got run over. The old was a Kawasaki Vulcan 750, and has been replaced in the family, with a brand new 2014 Vulcan 900. By brand new, I mean they literally took it out of the crate when I signed the papers, never even test-driven before!

Sweet bike.  Great bike, actually.  IMO, the Kawa Vulcan 900 is in the top tier of the mid sized bikes.  I owned an '08 Vulcan 900LT and loved it, but when the Triumph Thunderbird came out in '10 I knew it was a matter of time until I traded in the Vulcan and went with the T-Bird.  Riding two up is a bit easier for the T-Bird.   :aok

Is your bike the "Classic" version with the nostalgic styling?  Regardless, I really like the colors of your bike.  Enjoy!!!   :aok

That's a fantastic bike.  It's a full size bike with a midsize engine.  It runs really strong as it is not overweight and can be pretty sporty on the curves.  Fuel injection, water cooling, and a much lower center of gravity then your old bike was.  I also like the belt drive, you won't ever wear that out.

Now take a week vacation and go ride, because you'll be worthless at work for awhile staring out the window at your new two wheeler!

If you haven't done so already, take a MSF course, it's gotten pretty much mandatory for riding on base DOD wide.

Congrats on the commission, your new adventure is just now starting. I would also recommend you look over getting one of the "heavy duty use" laptops. One that can stand up to a lot of abuse and knocking around. It seems like nothing in the military will get done without a computer anymore. You should also get a separate HD or a few thumb drives for backups in case the unit gets fried or filched. I know blackberrys are kind of dated but the pocket capable data device is still a good thing to have when you can't carry the bigger laptop. I am a bit leery of using a personal phone for that kind of use given the nature of military life, opsec, and just murphy's law.

Yes sir!  That was the first thing I did before buying my first bike.  Now I'm looking into an advanced course.

It's the classic,  but not the Lt.  The Lt wasn't available with white wall tires,  which I really wanted.

Nice...nice.   I bought a 2007 Vulcan 900 classic a few months ago.  Took the BRC through a Harley dealer a couple weeks ago and in a day or two I will get my endorsement paper and get to go to the dmv and get all legal.

My Vulcan came with a windshield, floorboards and saddlebags.  I've had it setting in the garage for the most part as I don't like to be illegal doing stuff like that.  Got a training permit couple months ago and went riding with my uncle a time or two.  That brc class is worth its weight in gold, so to speak.  They taught us stuff I don't know if I would have picked up on or not.

The couple of pointers I tell new riders: First, listen carefully at the class, you'll learn a lot.  Second, you can't be taught experience.  Also, be careful on wet surfaces and especially road markings (painted surfaces) and man hole covers.  Both are extremely slick when wet.  If you live in the SW be sure and watch for fine sand that gets blown on the road.

My dad has a Vulcan 900. Good engine - we have done long hauls with it too and it's just fine on a fully loaded bike.  Very comfortable ride as the OEM seat is very good.

A little young for that no?   You're in the U.S. military you should be seducing hot chicks on a fresh new ducati..  :cool: (or an r6 they get the same looks/idea)  on second thought stay away from those girls  :bhead

I'm a cruiser guy,  no doubt.  My girlfriend always gives me a hard time about having my grandpa's sense of style lol. Thanks for the safety tips folks.  I'm always looking for things I can do better. Getting run over once already had been more than enough for a lifetime...
