Grayed Out Plane Icons
« on: May 24, 2014, 07:39:19 AM »
I started this in the Help and Training forum, but thought I should continue it here. Every since the terrain update players plane "Icons" become grayed out, out past about 3K. I have tried everything in Waffel's and Skuzzy's stickys yet I have had no improvement.

It was suggested in Help and Training to post the first part of a dxdiag and I have done so below.  Any help would be appreciated and yes the graphics card is a Intel HD Graphics 4000 card.

Yup, thats your problem. Your video card is running out of memory and so stops adding the color and so on here and there.

The game requirements for video say minimum is 256 MB , recommended 512 MB In the quote above your computer has 64 MB (red), well below the 256. To help they "borrow" ram from your system ram that is suppose to do all the other shuffling around. The games minimum is 2Gig, recommended 4Gig. You have 8 gig, but they allow almost 2 Gig (blue) to be used by the video card. This means less ram to run windows, the game, sound interface and so on.

You can turn down as much of the eye candy as you can and drop the texture size to 128. If your getting a decent frame rate ALL the time I'd suffer with greyed out icons. Droppping the graphics well help ease up on the card though.

Thank you. I will do as you suggested and, if I have to, live with it, at least for a while.

Thank you.  I soil do as you suggested

Also what I suspected right from the start:

They really don't do well with AH. There's been threads about those during the last year or so, wouldn't hurt to check what Skuzzy suggested there. Either this TechSupport forum or the Hardware and Software section.

I've got an older system by today's standards that still runs the game well by my standards.

The real problem is the lack of dedicated video RAM.  Only 64MB of video RAM available, which is below the minimum for the game.  It means the video card is going to be swapping data to/from main system memory whenever the game tries to draw a frame.

We do what we can with the Intel video chip, but there is only so much we can do with its limited resources.

Understood. I have an Alienware X51 ordered which should solve the problem.  :)
