Widewing requested this F6F skin a few weeks ago.
It is a Hellcat of VOF-1 based on the USS Tulagi during Operation Dragoon, the August 1944 invasion of southern France. VOF-1 was tasked with artillery spotting for the cruisers and battleships supporting the invasion. The Luftwaffe was generally nowhere to be seen but the squadron did manage to score six kills, with this aircraft involved with four of them. On the 19th August Ensign Wood was flying it and shot down a He-111 and shared another. Two days later Ensign Olszewski shot down two of a flight of three Ju-52s attempting to supply the German defending forces.
Following this the real aircraft sported four swastika kill markings. However as these are are not permitted in AH, I have replaced them with crosses. The aircraft was an early production F6F-5 still with F6F-3-style windows.
