Hey Guys! How's It Going?
« on: June 02, 2014, 11:12:27 PM »
It's been a while since I've been online or even visited these boards, so I figured I'd give everyone a little update for those that care.  As of May 17, 2014, I graduated Cum Laude from Union University with a Bachelor of Science in History.  Within a two weeks of graduating, I accepted my first job offer as a US History teacher at high school about 30 minutes away from my hometown.  As a first-year teacher, I am both excited and nervous to begin my new career.  It is going to be kind of awkward teaching juniors and seniors in high school when I am only 22, but they'll get over that.

I hope all of you are doing well.  Some of you I communicate with through Facebook.  If you would like to friend me there since I spend more time there than I do here, just shoot me a PM.

Well done Banshee

Young history teachers are the best of all. We need more of them. They consistently get the best results here.

WTFG Josh!

Too bad you can't be like my HS History teacher and bring in props to help the students understand certain things.  Swords from around the globe, muzzle loader with ammo, guns from WWI and WW2 etc were brought into class at least once a week.

They frown on that stuff now and the loss is to the students.

Dragon, about the best supplement is film and pictures. But they are also starting to frown on that as well. :(

My English teacher is only 22 and he's teaching his first year right now. Cool guy and definitely someone who is more in touch with the students.

And that is the one rule you should follow at the very least while teaching, be in touch with the students. Not just grade wise but be that "cool" teacher. The one that can hold a conversation when appropriate, give the class a treat every now and then and deliver the information when needed. That's all you need to please kids.

I'm by no means a teacher or an expert on such things, but it definitely helps to be in touch with the kids. Good luck with your job man, you'll need it with highschool kids.  :lol

Congrats Banshee :aok
As a former Instructor in the Army (average Trainee class size 156) a bit of advice.
Always be an expert in the subject at hand.
Every class will have what we called "Sharpshooters".
They're the ones in class who will try to make you slip up/test your knowledge
about whatever you're teaching or discussing.
Every day you can learn something from someone, regardless of age.
If you mess up and get dates, chronology or whatever wrong, correct yourself
as soon as you can. Admit to making a mistake and correct it.
The students will reward you with respect and admiration.
Get to know each student.
Make sure they know that you're approachable to help them as needed.
Best of luck with your new career.  :salute
