« on: June 10, 2014, 12:14:05 PM »
Time to rebuild the home build. Looking for recommendations for ~

CPU Intel i5 or i7  $300 range +/-

Motherboard

Vid card $250 - $325 range. Tom's Hardware 6/14 mid range top pick is Radeon R9 280X $280. I've always used Nvidea cards. Open to all suggestions.

Seasonic PS $125 range +/-

The rest of the stuff is being swapped out or relatively new.

Thanks

The new generation of i7 was just released. I'd sit on the purchase for a few days still to see if prices come down on the older generation.

Broadwell desktop line will be released sometime in 2015. That's a long wait. If you mean Haswell refresh, then most likely not. Sandy and Ivy Bridge didn't get cheaper when Haswell was released.

Depends what you're going to do with it. If you're not overclocking, you could get i7-4790 for about that price (Newegg has $20 off price promo)

I would save some by buying a K model i5 instead of the i7 and spending the rest on the VGA.

The difference between the Haswell and the Ivy is small enough, i would buy the one which is a cheaper CPU + mobo combo.

But again, im an el cheapo dude.

I'm running the I-5 4670k on a Z87-A Asus Max with an old 6850 ati card I have everything turned on except shadows, environment mapping 2 clicks. Running 60fps most of the time. The chip turbo's up to 4.2 and the temps are good with stock cooling so far.

AFAIK the performance increase in most games isn't worth an i7, I'd get a K series i5. At what resolution do you play? If you want to play at max settings a Gtx 760 will run them at 60fps up to 1080p if I'm not mistaken. I can't speak of all non stock coolers but the MSI TwinFrozr version overclocks 125MHz without upping the core voltage and with no temperature/noise penalties at all. You can go further with overvolting and tweaking the shader clock.

Started from the bottom...still at the bottom.

Here's what I've come up with. Feedback appreciated. As I'm a bit over budget, are my mobo and PS choices a bit over the top? I want to stay with a Seasonic PS

i5-4670K  CPU
Asus Z97-A LGA 1150 MOBO ($159)
EVGA Superclocked GTX 760
SeaSonic 750KM3 750W ($140)
G.Skill 240 pin 1600 DDR3 2x4G

+ CPU fan + thermal compound

Total Newegg price $907

I'd personally get a cheaper Z87 board, unless the one you mentioned has some overclocking function that you're after. By the way, what cooler will you use? Cooler Master has some nice stuff at fair prices.

I have no intention of OC'ing anything.

ASUS and Gigabyte boards came up as top choices in my research. I don't know all that much as per differences; just want a quality mobo at a reasonable cost.

The CPU fan I'm looking at is Cooler Master Hyper w/120 mm fan - $35

The overall pricing were from Newegg. I plan to compare to Amazon.

Then replace i5-4670K with i5-4690, which is better CPU at the same frequency and $15 cheaper with current promo.

I noticed this gem when I was doing a little research myself for an upgrade build for myself.  My E6750 system has got to go!

I see no drawbacks to the 4690 for normal use and will be building around this on a Gigabyte board.
