Probably the worst timing ever but..
« on: June 10, 2014, 07:47:38 PM »
After a few years at the lumberyard.. and like a couple days selling insurance lol.. I decided to go for my cdl license and pursue a career in driving..  I just enrolled in a driving school.. At the school they were basically saying OTR work is what is needed out there.. Should be done in November just in time to avoid the snow and cold.. Any guys have advice or pointers on what to expect?

There's a few truck drivers here.  Learning in the winter is bomb-diggity.

You can expect to have your arse run through the wringer for the 1st year and you probably won't see home for 2 and 3 months at a time during that period. If you can get through that 1st 12 to 18 months without getting fed up with the crap, you'll be just fine. A OTR life ain't for everybody. Some like it, most don't. Good luck.
Lighten up Francis

It's a lonely life. Hope you don't have a family already.

You don't have to pursue OTR. There are some local runs that will have you home everyday. Without experience though you may have to do some OTR at first where the companies pay you pennies per mile. Some of these outfits only have noob drivers as once drivers get some experience they are off to better paying jobs.
Be careful and don't drive tired or you may face charges like that Walmart driver that just killed Tracy Morgan's friend on the NJ turnpike.  :uhoh

Do you truckers listen to audio books, such as from audible.com?

Watch a few episodes of ice road truckers and ask yourself if you want to do that stuff.
