Ten Tonne Tessie/Tess
« on: June 20, 2014, 01:57:49 PM »

The Grand Slam bomb, also known as 'Ten Ton Tess', was the largest conventional weapon ever to be developed by the British military.
It was designed by Barnes Wallis, inventor of not only the Wellington Bomber but also the bouncing bomb used by the Dambusters, as a way of destroying key sites without having to hit them directly.
He came up with the idea at the beginning of the Second World War, but it was not until towards the end of the conflict that it finally attracted support from top brass and went into production.
The bomb was dropped from a Lancaster bomber and hit the ground at speeds of up to 700mph, tunnelling as deep as 40m into the earth.

How much development does something like that take? Never having been in the field of ordnance development, it seems like kind of a slam dunk. " Let's take a normal bomb design and make it one whale of a f****** lot bigger, see?" But  I suppose there might be a bit more to it than that...

So that would give you 22,000 lb of HE compared to the 42,000 lbs of a 3 Lanc flight? No way, nobody would use what is a pretty cool weapon. Make it available for a formation but do perk them. Not a super heavy perk like the B-29, which carrys about the same load LB-wise, But a perk worthy of the power. And 72,000 LBs of HE is definitely "Power". +1 I flew Lancs the other day after years and had forgotten what are legend they are.

What was the Lancaster's performance with one of those strapped to it?
