Typhon of Steel great scenario and setup
« on: June 23, 2014, 03:53:35 PM »
BIG <S> Nef for the scenario and setup.  I flew on the ALLIED side so my comments come from that prospective.  Hopefully a few AXIS pilots will chime in with comments.

The scenario is the building block of course but its the setup that either drives us all to BBS to complain and point fingers or cheer wildly.  To me this setup was pretty dang good.  I flew 2 of 3 frames in each frame our squad had its hands full with the AXIS planes and pilots.  Nothing was taken for granite and the expectation of defeat was there if we didn't do everything we could to plan, practice and command.  Route planning, timing, coordination and deception allowed the side that did more to win the engagement.  As it should be.

So to me when this happens it appears to be a fair fight and given the historical scenario it wasn't a fair fight back in the day.  So to create a fair fight in cartoon land from a slaughtering by the ALLIES in the real world is no easy task.

So cheers to you Mr. Nef for a great setup from my view of the cartoon world and hope some of the setup conditions and lessons learned will be used by other CM's when they design it.

Thanks!

As always, every FSO needs a post-game review by players and CMs to see what right and what didn't. The best part of it is that I get to hear new ideas and positive critiques that I will incorporate into FSO somehow.

Looking at the scores (which will be released soon) for frames 2 and 3, the Axis just couldn't drop enough ships to keep them in it. In this aspect, I should have went with my tried and true method of disabling 1000lb bombs for the Corsairs and Hellcats and 2000lb bombs for the TBM as I previously mentioned. The Axis really tried hard but just couldn't inflict as much damage, although the overall ship kills were even in Frame 1.

The Allied ship placement needed to be placed at least 1 grid closer to the Axis bases, to allow for secondary strikes as mentioned by Devil505. I try to balance objective distance out as I am not a big fan of super-quick engagements in FSO. There is a sweet spot for timing them and I went with my typical ranges but the Allied CVs had the ability to place themselves one more sector away from the Axis at T+60 and 2 sectors by T+120, something I should have seen as an issue and something I will be remembering for my next FSO. :)

Good job everyone! See ya up!
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!
