Yikes!
« on: July 02, 2014, 10:42:06 PM »
There was a thread titled "What do you consider a beast?"  I think this qualifies.  It took off from Minneapolis St. Paul International today.  I didn't see it but caught it on the news:

Saw one of those a few years ago,it came to town for an air show and left taking a train to Ireland!    Ya the train was on board,I dont recall the weight but it was supposed to be the only plane capable of doing it!

   Yes it is a monster!

More like Minneapolis St. Paul International fell from underneath it by the looks of it...

An-225 is one of its kind - literally - there is only one plane was built on the base of An-124 but scaled up.

There is a good documentary about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daSbUOGfw64

Also this documentary is quite old (+/- the period it was brought back to life again) since than it has very active operational service side by side with An-124 carrying huge payloads all around the world.

It is a spectacular aircraft.

From what I've read it is actually quite low for a such a massive bird. Can't find the numbers right now.

Both A-124 and A-225 have huge wings that have great lift potential

I wish they would complete the 2nd A-225 already. :x  But I'm curious that when they do, will they stick with it's original change to a single vertical stabilizer, or will they change it to the 1st 225's twin tail design?   If able to change to the twin tail, it would allow her to carry even bulkier cargo on top. :headscratch:

Also, I'll take one for x-mas. :D

Don't know if he'll look at this but; Hey columbo, if you had a chance to fly the 225, would you? :)

The twin tail change for 225 from 124 was due to bulky payload issues - originally it was build to carry soviet shuttle (Buran). I think they decided to learn from the problems US had with carrying the Shuttle over 747 and problems with the stability. So they created twin-tail in the first place.

In any case it is unlikely that 2nd An-225 would be build as there is no much marked for it. The original 225 was reviled to airworthy condition in the first place because of some customers need. And it servers the Antonov airways for such needs.

Also most of little bit less bulky loads are carried by An 124 birds that are smaller but still can carry huge payload that even Galaxy can't carry.

AFAIK there were discussions to restart the production of An-124 but it is still on hold as many customers are needed to make it economically efficient. So building the second 224 maybe even less economically worthy.

Also it isn't clear what would happen with this project as major Antonov-124 customer is Russia and it isn't look like the relations between Ukraine and Russia would go back to normal path any soon.

However if Ukraine would be pushed to NATO (and Russia does everything that it would happen) there maybe a good chances that Antonov would build new for NATO needs maybe with Rols-Roys or GE engines.

Actually NATO leased An-124s (little sister of 224 if it can be called little at all) quite frequently.

So we'll see...
