Fantastic picture, wow you set up in a perfect spot.

He really needed a cool down, I see it's 9/6/11 had the rut begun?

I don't the know Gunnison area at all, but I've seen the success ratio's for the otc hunts, tough going. I still enjoyed them though, been several years since I've done one in CO.

Ive hunted the Gunnison area several times. When I was hunting there the herd was strong. Heres a Bull I took my last time there.

I love the area but had a few bad experiences. One with with two co-Hunters. Im not going to call every Elk hunter with a .300 Weatherby a bone head but it seems every bone head I see is shooting one. Well two bone heads in my party with .300 Weath's crippled 3 Bulls we never recovered.

But what broke my heart was the road shooting. All of a sudden 15 + rifle rounds going off that could only mean a bunch jumping out of a truck and unloading on a Herd. I swore next Bull I take will be with a bow or during a Black Powder season. I cant be around hunters like that anymore.

I know what you"re saying about the other hunters and problems with it. I now mostly hunt solo in wilderness areas and have been lots more successful since doing so.

Nice bull Rich

The wilderness areas really do provide that ability to get away from the crowds, I really enjoy hunting them when they're an option in the unit.

I shoot a 7mm mag or .338 for elk and don't own a .300 Wthby

I've never done an archery hunt, but I have gone out in the rut numerous times and observed/helped. Maybe get into it someday when I have more time to dedicate.

For me one of the biggest rewards of an elk hunt is the meat, nothing compares and it's so lean, tasty, healthy, and hormone/antibiotic free...

Yeah I love Elk meat. The only thing that can compare is young moose thats been gorging on blueberrys.

I took him with a .338 mag Browning A-bolt.

I love it. And the rifle/BOSS is a very accurate system. One thing tho is never hunt with the recoil reducer BOSS on. Man that thing is loud. The .338 win mag isnt that bad recoil-wise anyways. On a trip to Africa I forgot the "weight" BOSS and had to use the recoil reducer BOSS. Man I had the entire camp hating me after 10 days of hearing that thing go bang.

I love the A-bolt. Like all my rifles I had it bedded and triggered to 3.5 lbs. Ive only shot three bullets thru it. I got lucky and got a bunch of a special run of Swift 217 grn A-frames, and also bought 250 grn A-frames. Ive also shot Sierra match SPBTs in 250 and 300 grns. Not a whole lot of variety but enough to say without question the concept of barrel harmonics is real. I'd also say the BOSS is mostly a device for hand loaders and die hards.

Honestly I dont even know if Browning still makes the BOSS. With that BOSS .338 mag I made the longest shot of my life on an Elk I'd already hit hard but was still up. A Lasered 475 yrds. I never would have taken the shot had I not already hit him. He rolled down a mountain side. My God I wish I had it on video.

Prefer? Hard to say. I have all 3 of my favorite rifles. An A-Bolt, a Rem M-700, and a Win M-70 wooden stock. Both the M-700 and A-Bolt are stainless and all weather. I have 3 M-700s all '06 and under and my A-Bolt is .338. I'd say for .300 mag or bigger I'd go with the A-bolt and for '06 and smaller I'd get a M-700. I just like the feel of the A-Bolt in all weather heavier calibers.

If you want a thumper and weather isnt a consideration nothing beats a Win M-70. I had to have one shipped up from Texas cause it was the closest I could find a lefty in .375 H&H. Boy I got a honey out of a special run of rifles too. I have a 1.5x5 Leo-lll on it along with Ghost rings. Now all I need is the Buffalo.

Boss on my Browning .338 too, love it, shoulder still sore after sighting it in, but I'm 5'7 150 so...never feel it when you're live. Being a Range Master though Bailey I'm sure you shoot more in a year than I will in lifetime, so you've got a lot more experience to make comparisons with. I thought it should be more like a push than punch, still feels like a punch

Just looked at your bull's pic again, broken brow tine, he was a battler.

When I rifle hunt for elk, I use a 7mm rem. mag Smith and Wesson 1500. I prefer to bowhunt, but most years I cant get the time to archery hunt and have to go last minute general season rifle.

Heres my M-70 .375 H&H. I shoot 300 grn A-frames thru it and while some might find it a bit heavy its really a sweetheart to shoot.

Eland is the best tasting meat I ever ate. Even the old Bulls. This one tasted even better considering I did about 30 low crawls while stalking it for hours until I finally got him.

Better then beef, better then chicken, better then other game. I wish like heck I could buy it here.

I share the road with elk on Trans Canada hwy 1/16; here are lots, horde, they are dangerous for us driving trucks in winter time , always on the icy roads licking deicing salt; they have different color winter /summer; more kind of white camo in winter ;
