And not an American toy
Not at all. Israel does not trust other countries in supplying tanks, missile boats, or rifles after bad experiences in the past (mostly France and Britain). For a time Israel tried to develop even its own fighter as well, but costs and American pressure closed that program.
The other Israeli hero system of the current war, other than "Iron dome", is the "Trophy" system (or "wind jacket" in its Hebrew name).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trophy_%28countermeasure%29You can see it installed on the rear side of the turret in the picture posted by GScholz. So far it scored 100% success rate in destroying incoming anti-tank missiles. Together with a few missile-attack attempts on Israeli tanks before protective edge it amounts to over 20 events as far as I know. It not only destroys the missile, it also locates the source and on several events (from short ranges) the launchers found themselves facing the Merkava main gun within seconds. Both "Iron dome" and "Trophy" were made by the same company (in collaboration with other Israeli companies).
