With the last two remaining airworthy Lancasters soon to be flying together on the UK airshow circuit I thought I'd do a couple of Lanc skins to celebrate. The 9 Squadron aircraft is the same scheme as the British BBMF Lanc is currently painted in. I have already done a skin from the same squadron as the Canadian one so I have gone for a 57 Squadron aircraft, the info for which was kindly supplied by Lyric1. There is a photo of DX-A
here and one of WS-J
here.
Lancaster W4964 WS-J flew with 9 Squadron RAF and was a veteran of 104 bombing sorties including two missions against the Tirpitz where it dropped the massive Tallboy bomb. Its noseart is based on the Johnnie Walker Scotch whisky brand logo and their slogan "Still Going Strong". The white vertical tails were formation leader markings used in daylight bombing missions.
Lancaster LM624 DX-A flew with 57 Squadron RAF. It was lost with all its crew during a mission to bomb the Mitteland Canal on the night of 6th/7th November 1944. The red tail markings indicated an aircraft equipped with the G-H navigation aid.
