Bitdefender, Eset, Avast, Kapersky oh my!!
« on: August 11, 2014, 10:10:39 AM »
I have a new computer that I would like to DL some antivirus software into. Could i get some suggestions. Ive been doing some reading on the subject, but to tell you the truth im a bit lost....So many choices.....ive done some reading....but all the articals i read make me feel like they were trying to sell me something and not give an honest review

Is the free antivirus any good? Im not worried about paying for something, would like to get a really good AV software program for this machine. My boy does go on gaming sites, wife and i purchase things on line as well.........What made all this come to past... our last computer was hosed by a virus (Cant even start in safe mode) But that said, no loss as it was an ancient Dell8400 that should have been put out to pasture years ago....

Oh the OS is Win 7

So any suggestions? Thanks guys in advance  :salute :aok

I've had good luck so far with Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials too which is free.  The must do is stay away from sites that attack you and don't open just any old email attachment.

A friend is addicted to poker sites.  I don't think any software will protect you from their attacks.

Start your security thinking at an earlier point than anti-virus: Create each user an account without administrative privileges plus an administrator's account with a password. Never use the admin account unless there's no other choice! That means, a normal user is allowed to download anything, but the installation has to be done "as another user", meaning the admin with the password. Needless to say your boy shouldn't know it!

As for which anti-virus is good or not, there's actually no fool proof one! Many of them also have got stuffed with features that have nothing to do with viruses, like "Internet cost saver", defragment, temporary files cleaner, updater for other programs, backup reminder etc.  Skuzzy has often recommended to stay away from Norton and McAfee for good reasons, so you can count them out at once. Eset seems to have the smallest negative effect on games. From the freebies I prefer Avast, but with a grain of salt: The normal install package is somewhat bloated, but the custom install will let you choose only what you think you really need. MSE is light but AFAIK it wants Windows' automatic updates to be on, causing unwanted Internet action amidst the tightest furball at the worst. For AVG I've created somewhat of an allergy, even the paid version wants you to install all sorts of additional features. I've seen their free PC TuneUp cripple totally valid programs by removing parts of them as junk. Avira has a good reputation of finding viruses some others don't. It has a slightly home coded overall looks, making it somewhat clumsy to use. Whichever you choose, remember that everything man-made can be reverse engineered, bypassed, cracked...You're not safe, but you can build a safety net to minimize any potential damage.

Hard? I suppose you mean the admin thing? No, not at all. The basic setting is a one time thing to do, using it requires knowing right from left. Here's a short 101 for any version of Windows:

Go to Control Panel, find User Control. Create as many new users as you find suitable for your needs. At least one for kids and another for parents. Set them to be regular users. You probably already have configured your current account according to your likes and have lots of data stored there, so create an admin-level account instead of "parents" or "yours" and protect it with a password. Now go to the admin account and again to the User Control. Change your "parents" or "yours" account to be a regular user instead of an administrator. If you're using Windows 8(.1) I'd recommend a local account instead of a Microsoft one unless you need to sync multiple computers. For Win8, here's Microsoft's instructions: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/create-user-account#create-user-account=windows-8. Not too hard, isn't it?

For the everyday use there's nothing different using a regular user's account instead an administrator's one. Basically the only thing where you'd notice any difference is when you want to install anything. Let's say you'd like to install AH in your regular account. Nothing special, you simply download the package to your Downloads folder and right click it, choosing "run as another user". You'll get a window showing your account and below it a dropdown list of other available accounts. Choose the admin account, enter the password and continue normally. IIRC the newest Windows versions will even bring the admin choice window directly if you do the download-install procedure in one single run from the browser. Same goes for every update, like an automated Flash Player one. The best part is, that when a virus tries to install itself, you'd get the same pop-up window asking for the admin password! That doesn't apply to browser add-ons, though, they are classified as "consumer helping" instead of something harmful. But they also are user account specific, so getting rid of them is relatively easy through a clean account.

Of course you'd want some anti-virus running in the background, too. And running an adware cleaner like AntiMalware every now and then for every user is also recommendable.

I also recommend ESET smart security...been using it since 2.0 and used ESET nod32 before that..

Least resources hogging AV, smallest footprint, etc...

I have only ever had 1 computer get a virus, back in mid 90's , on win95...

For the reasons TC listed.  I've tried a lot of AV programs and while ones like Avast did well for me, it still was a resource hog and wasn't 'gamer friendly' compared to ESET.

You should have bought only the antivirus and not the security suite. The antivirus is extremely simple and light weight - the full security suite then again is not.
