The Final CombatFive days after the Nagasaki bomb, on August 14th 1945,Emperor Hirohito signed the peace treaty and surrendered unconditionally to the Allies. Following the surrender, Hirohito ordered the armed forces of Japan to stop all hostilities. However, some elements of the Japanese Navy Air Force chose to ignore this order and continue fighting against the allied forces, triggering a historic dogfight with British carrier-based aircraft above Tokyo bay. This would be the final contested carrier air strike of World War Two...

Duel over MartabanEarly in January the Rangoon defense was increased by several aircraft from the 1st squadron of the A.V.G. On January 13, the entire first Squadron joined the other A.V.G forces at Rangoon. Air battles continued for weeks over Rangoon until it finally fell to enemy ground forces at the end of February. This Snapshot represents one of the many air battles that may have taken place over Rangoon.

Polish EscortMk III Mustangs of No. 315 (Polish) City of Deblin Squadron, escort Lancaster Bombers over the Dutch Coast during the summer of 1944, as they are led by Capt. Eugeniez Horbyzewski (nicknamed "Dzubek"), Poland's 3rd highest scoring ace in W W II (16 1/2 victories). This print is a tribute to the Polish Airman who fought the Nazis longer than any other Allied Air Force. It is not widely known that the Polish Air Force was the third largest air force of the western allies, and that one Polish Squadron (No. 303) was the highest scoring Allied squadron during the Battle of Britain.

Flying with LucchiniFranco Lucchini cut his teeth in the Spanish Civil War earning 5 victories. During WWII he shot down 21 more aircraft to become one of Italy's top aces. Much of his time was spent in the Macchi MC-200 fighters, but in late 1941 the 10 Gruppo was reequipped with the MC-202 fighter. After a training period they were reassigned to Sicily. Most of Lucchini's victories were the Curtiss Tomahawks, but he also shot down some Spitfires, and a Douglass Boston. On October 24th he was injured and when he was finally released from the hospital to return to 10 Gruppo the Axis had been defeated in North Africa and the focus was on defending Sicily from the impending Allied invasion. On July 5th Lucchini shot down a Spitfire that was escorting some American B-17's, but then in turn he was hit by fire from the B-17's and was shot down. His body was found 2 days later at the crash site. Lucchini flew at least 262 missions and was awarded the Medaglia d'Argento al Valore ilitare, (Silver Medal) five times, four War Crosses, and a German Iron Cross during his career.
