Soundpacks, and gunsights made by other players is fantastic!  But for us "non PC guys" it sucks.
It sucks because I have to click a link that I have to search for somewhere in the BBS, that contains a "search" feature that provides inadequate results, then once I get past my PC which often trys to stop me from visiting the sites where these additions reside, I have to then download them, unzip them with programs I do not have, then find the folder in my windows 8 PC that discourages finding that folder, then paste it into somewhere that I have now forgotten in the Ah directory.
How about this. Create a way for  players to add content like these and give it a + or a - Roman style.  Then have the approved sound packs and gunsights viewable right from the Aces High Website. Then create a way to browse what is available, and if someone wants it, they click on it, and it installs automatically.

modified for subject.

I think anything uploaded into ah would have to be zipped also.  so you wont really save many steps.  and again we dont have dozens of sounds to really choose from.  there's like 5 or 6.

time and effort on ah's part isnt really worth it.  sorry mk .

I'd imagine there is a download manager via SMF, that people can upload their own files (ZIP) to one single spot.

Wouldn't there be some need for content base line quality like our skins? I would assume HTC has some concern to what they want to support from players as it could be misconstrued to a perception of the quality of our game.

On the other hand it would have to be reviewed through a gate keeper such that no perception of HTC favoring one player's content over another's. And then we would need two distinct categories of content. Purely historic and all other such as sound packs, TrackIR profiles, stick settings, hps files, personalized maps, and custom gunsights.

Does HTC even want to be responsible for allotting the storage space and being the gate keeper for the content? Players as gate keepers do not thrill me because things like that tend to end up like faculty lounge politics. And free open ended publishing, no thank you.

So to the OP, how do you propose to persuade Skuzzy he needs another job?

I was not thinking as specific as you are. That is because I simply do not understand it.
What I would like is a way for a person to submit user generated content that is easily downloadable and inserted into Aces High.  I have not considered whether it should be officially sanctioned or not. That really is another subject I suppose.  Maps are, and skins, and that makes sense, but what about other stuff. Alot of what you do I think could/should be. :headscratch:
For example your gunsights. (which by the way are wonderful, thank you)  :salute
This is my process for getting new gunsights currently.
I find a post in the bbs from you where you provide an excellent description of a gunsight, why and how it works. Alot of historical facts about it, and pictures of what it looks like ingame.
If I want to download it immediately after seeing that post that requires me also doing it immediately because it gets lost in the bbs quickly afterwards.  The search function simply doesn't help me find it later.
Next I need to download it. This involves clicking on your link which takes me to a site where I might be able to do that. My computer's security settings HATE these sites, whether is gunsights, or soundpacks.
If I get through that (and I am not willing to change my security settings, mostly because my own ignorance probably, but still...
...Then I have to unzip the file, with a program I do not have on my pc.
Install a "free unzip" program that wants me to install god knows what as well,  and then figure out how to paste tit into the correct folder in Aces High. (and make sure its actually unzipped.)

I want a tab on the Aces High Main Page. "User Generated Content" Then I want something like Gunsights, soundpacks, Skins, maps, offline scenarios, whatever.  Add a Star* for HTC sanctioned. (like historical gunsights, vs the hellokitty gunsight) whatever it may be.
Finally I want to click on it, and it downloads and installs. period.

...Because alot of you computer guys make alot of really great stuff that is very difficult for us non-computer guys to access.
And I want to :aok

And make sure it's all checked my HTC staff to not have virus' etc, and perhaps have a step by step guide on how to unzip it yourself (and programs to download) if necessary.

+1 for this idea.

I've gotten the  impression from many long years with this game, HTC does not want to host user content other than skins. The game comes with a default sound pack, maps, and gunsights. Everything else is between players. I have usb memory sticks full of game content so I don't have to worry about loosing the stuff.

I am thinking the same thing as bustr mk.  while it would be nice to have, think about how much work it would take to just host all the different sound packs.  specially when new things get added or changed every couple of weeks.  not to mention the hundreds of gunsights available.  some squads have their own sound packs that is a mix of a few others.  then we have one player that is very protective of his sound pack and rightfully so.  he spend a lot of time and money to create it.  what if others want to upload a sound pack with some of his sounds without proper rights.  it would create a mess.  or what if some other guy uses sounds that are copyrighted from another game.  does ah really have the time to verify that everything is in order?

heck I would settle for just having all the skins available as a single download.  that way I dont have to worry about having skins that perhaps are obsolete and not used in the game anymore.

Mk84,

Although your request is very thoughtful and well intended, I think that Bustr has given us all good enough reason for HTC not to incorporate such a tool into their software.  But please take note that they have provided the BB forum where good information is stored and plenty of FAQ  can be answered.  Also, it always puzzled me  :headscratch: why OS do not have the zip software bundled (maybe legal actions, who knows)?

Maybe if they worked along those lines and set up that forum to allow hierarchy in posts dropping down (hide / unhide) from  Stickied Threads on particular content such as sound pack A, or British aircraft skin submittals, etc., it might help to simplify the process.

This all reminds me of the good work that Soda has done  :salute  One of the first places besides the BB that I began to read and find new features and understand how things worked. http://members.shaw.ca/soda_p/models.htm  There is so much good user content out there, it would take an army of "Soda"s to keep track of it all.  So for now, word of mouth (ask a buddy what he likes or dislikes about his uploaded content, you would probably get a better understanding than a rating system).
