What is that bomb in the chin? It is not the cannon pod and at least his first F4 in the famous mig ambush had no cannon.

F4 phantoms are super-cool. My favorite jet after the Mirage III.

This is a D model.  I'll research and get back to you on the bump.  Don't recall from flying it back in the school house.  If memory serves me right it was part of the RHAW system sensor array. It did carry a 20 mm centerline gun pod which I got to make use of during school.  A real testosterone booster!   :x Not known for its accuracy because the centerline bore sight had to be perfect.  At times, we suspected it was loaded and not bore-sighted very well because it would put rounds in places the piper was not lined up on.

Is that actually his airplane or one painted to represent his?

Fate whispers to the warrior "You cannot withstand the storm" and the warrior whispers back "I AM THE STORM"

I read a book about the formation of the school informally called "Top Gun".  One of the main tactics created out of this school was to actually have the RIO tell the pilot what to do in order for him to lock onto the target with radar.  The RIO would basically call for different maneuvers.  Well, the Navy 'Top Gun' pilots got a chance to fly against some of the Air Force pilots in mock dogfights.  For some reason, Robin Olds had a Navy RIO.  After the RIO told him what to do, he told the guy in the back seat to shut up Lol.  Anyhow, after 4 mock fights, Robin came out with 2 wins and 2 losses.  He must have been an incredible pilot.  I believe Duke Cunningham also flew in this mock engagement.  All this is documented in the book "Top Gun" which came out in ~2004.
Currently ignoring Vraciu as he is a whoopeeed retard.

As I thought I remembered, the bump is a housing for a RHAW antenna.
