I read a book about the formation of the school informally called "Top Gun". One of the main tactics created out of this school was to actually have the RIO tell the pilot what to do in order for him to lock onto the target with radar. The RIO would basically call for different maneuvers. Well, the Navy 'Top Gun' pilots got a chance to fly against some of the Air Force pilots in mock dogfights. For some reason, Robin Olds had a Navy RIO. After the RIO told him what to do, he told the guy in the back seat to shut up Lol. Anyhow, after 4 mock fights, Robin came out with 2 wins and 2 losses. He must have been an incredible pilot. I believe Duke Cunningham also flew in this mock engagement. All this is documented in the book "Top Gun" which came out in ~2004.
