For the A36 Fans in Color
« on: September 26, 2014, 05:30:34 PM »
A-36 squadron in 44 over Sicily in full color. They do have a funny looking one with 4 big tubes sticking forward out of the wings. Guess that was early propaganda to fool the Germans if they happened to see the film. Seems to have finally worked 70 years later on members of this forum....... :old:

Very cool video.  :aok

The one with the "big tubes" isn't an A-36. It's a Mustang 1A. Notice it doesn't have the two 50's in the chin.

From what I can find, 1A performed low level armed recon and mission follow up for the A-36. So how about those available with the storch?

Ch200: GVgreif: nener nener you missed my storch.
Ch200: someguy: so what!!! I have cannons and fuel. FOO Yooo......
Ch200: GVgreif: so does my wingman in his 1A. Bend over and crack a 20mm wide smile hehehehehe. I was BAIT.....

P-51 Apache, since it has American markings (just to be as accurate as possible). This airplane qualifies for the Early War arena based on its date of operational service.

What dates does HTC use to delineate Early, Mid, and Late War? This plane, especially with its 20mm's, seems a bit much for Early War.

All you have to do is check the service dates of the planes/tanks that are already there. What you see as advantages are actually disadvantages in EW. It carries no bombs, which means it is in the only useless category for EW (no one fights in there). It would be faster than the 109F4 and 190 at 15k and below, but above that the 109/190 would still be faster (except for diving, obviously). As we have seen in LW the Lancs will still have their top speed and intercepts would still be a problem.

In MW the Typhoon is faster and likely has a better zoom climb, so it would not change much there.

In LW there is already the Tempest (and many others) which is faster at all alts and certainly has a better zoom climb.

So all fears about it are poorly conceived in the very least.

I don't think there are any ill-conceived fears about the A-36/Pony A. It would probably make a pretty effective BnZ fighter below 15k. Especially in the EW arena, which you said it qualifies for.

A Merlin with four blades is not the same as an Allison with three, but you deny the fear exists and then mention BnZ. Said another way, there already exists a number of fighters in EW that will outperform the P-51 Apache in the vertical.

Somehow I don't think we are in any danger of seeing new airplanes for quite some time. So, I would welcome the P-51 Apache/Mustang IA or A-36 Apache either one.

The P-51 was the same ship as the Mustang IA,  Contract NA-91.  Two of this production run were set aside for the XP-51B (XP-78). 93 were shipped as Mustang IA. 54 were modified as photo recon P-51-1NA, one as P-51-2NA, all later designated as F-6A and designated as Apache. All equipped with 4x20mm Hispano's.

They all had the -39 Allison. The A-36 had the -87 which had much more power (1500 at WEP) but FTH around 5K - not ideal for Boom and Zoom.  The A-36 had the six 50's, two of which were in the 'cheeks'.  The Mustang I had 4x50's and 4x30 cal.

the Utube ships are A-36s maybe both 27th and 86th FG. The Mustang IA and P-51-1NA/F-6A did not have bomb racks. The 4x20mm ship sitting off to one side during take off was the P-51-1NA/F-6 probably from 68TRG maybe 111TRS

Wouldn't effect gameplay much. The P-51D loses power from about 13k to 19k (somewhere in that range).  So I normally only climb to an altitude of 10k.  90% of the action happens at or below 10k anyhow.
