Most tank gunsights have a fixed magnification, you can't zoom in at all.

Only tanks like the Panther, both Tigers, Sherman VC and a few more have two magnification setting which can be toggled with Z

Now the question becomes, do players have favorite tanks or are they driven to choose by the optics?

Hard to tell . But the second most popular tank after the free Panzer IVH (by kill&death statistics) is the T-34/85, which has lousy optics. And the Sherman VC with it's great magnification (second best in game) is quite rare in the MA.

is it just me and my old age or does the sights really seem hazy when you look threw them compared to the outside views?

Only in tanks like the T-34 for example. German tanks sights for example are very clear.

That threw me off too for awhile.  BTW you may not beware you can use a slider on a joystick in mode 2 to control the range  on those tanks with adjustable range finders.  You just have to set it up to do that.

I don't tank very much but, I have things like that and my positions setup for my left thumb. Problem is, I use the same thumb positions for other things on my fighters and end up nailed from behind because my brain is going, no don't drop flaps in a tank, no don't turn off combat trim, no don't...oops boom. But, that was my position 2 button to shoot back........DouH!!!!!

Hindsight is always 20/20, but one has to wonder why the Germans didnt upgrade their Panzer IV H tanks. They would have been that much more effective on the Ost Front.

to add to this, in the German and Soviet tanks, pressing "C" and "V" will adjust the range marker on the gunsight.  As Luche previously stated some of the german tanks and tank destroyers have two different zoom levels.
