For the Nerdy Gurus.
« on: October 02, 2014, 06:49:15 PM »
 :lol  Anywho...

Anyone have a ballpark idea as to what it will take to run the upcoming "New" Aces High update with all the bells and whistles? Video card, ROM, all the works to run smoothly? I know I will have to update my Tower soon with it being nearly 5 years old with just above average toys inside the box at the time of purchase. Currently running standard speed, nothing over clocked. Don't know much about the hardware so in response please dumb it down a hair  Thumbs UP!

I know of plenty sites and locations to purchase from, just looking for most recommended setup at a "fair" price. Not looking for bottom of barrel stuff or top shelf, just a happy medium setup.
It is a TilDeath Tower + setup if that helps. Lost contact with him over the years.

Thanks.

The easy answer as Skuzzy has said is just wait and see. The recommended hardware from HTC is not officially established yet for the new version. Just keep adding money to the piggy bank and then make your decisions once the recommendations are confirmed/released. Everything else is pure speculation right now.

Skuzzy has said several times that there is no sense speculating like Z06 has said.

Even AH in its current form can crush the fastest systems out there if you crank the reflections/environmental tab to max.  If I max out every detail setting, put on the max anti aliasing and AS settings, then fly in busy areas with lots of tanks and planes in view, I can see 30fps and a lot of notchiness with a 4930k 780ti system.  Paradoxically, you can run a pretty modest system with full detail and reflections off or on just 1 notch, and see great 60fps fairly consistent performance.  So, who really knows what the future will bring.  Hopefully the beta will give everyone a good idea of what to expect hardware requirement wise.

As the previous poster said, staying flexible and being patient are your best options right now IMO.  If you need a system now, focusing your resources on your graphics card is probably the best thing you can do.  Any decent CPU from 2500k up to 4790k will push a good GPU pretty well, for the mid 300$s you can get one of the faster cards for the $ out there, nVidia's 970 card.  Building a decent 1150 socket system with that card can be done in the 1000$ range, check out Kool's thread here - IMO with something along those lines you'll probably be just fine with whatever game you play, including the new version of AH when it comes out.

I suggest you all wait until AH3 is ready for testing.
HTC are in alpha stage, they do not need anyone else to do what they want, however to make purdy graphics available faster allthough extra manpower normally speed things up.

Bah!  Who knows.

I have a pretty good system now and I am still trying to get it to give me decent performance.  As has been stated above, my old (lesser) system performed better.

My current rig:
  • i7-5820
  • RAM - 32 GB
  • GeForce GTX980

Should be able to run pretty much anything.  My understanding (willing to be corrected) is AH cannot make use of multithreading / modern DX so having a super duper PC makes no difference.

I understand that they want (need?) to be accessible to the lower end PC's but that is not the world we live in now.  Need to get with it!!

If multithreading means using more than one core, then AH does it. It uses two.

Fess67, as for differences in performance between your old and new computer, I suppose you also had a much more lightweight operating system in your old rig. With XP it was relatively easy to get below 25 running processes, at the moment I'm running 39 which I can easily cut to 35 before starting the game. <Brand here> computers easily have over 50 processes running in the background with all their "customer participation programs" and other crap right from the start. Add to that a multifunctional printer and a webcam, both installed the easy way, and you'll easily end near 100!

Natively, the current release of Aces High uses two cores.  However, DirectX uses threads as well (sound, input...).  It is quite possible to several threads to be running simultaneously, when the game is running.

The new update shifts more of the load to the video card.  Ideally, it will all balance out.

Bizman, HP computers are around 75 to 80 processes, out of the box.

Wow, I underestimated the amount quite a lot!

one third should probably not be necessary (windows 7) of those 80 processes .
Laptops require more than desktops (wifi bluetooth 3/4g etc).
