This sunspot is soo big, is visible with naked eye; it caused 2 more strong X class flares this week. I'm going to try to take few photos, in next 30 min, before sunset is safe, and looks ok sunny here south of Dallas. If  has a  CME associated is going to hit the Earth from this position.  where's my tinfoil hat

1) Scroll up.  2)  Look at photo of sun.    3)  Note dark colored sunspots      This last year has been the MOST active solar year in over 7 years.

BTW GHI:  You would make a great amateur radio operator.  Seriously.  Once you get a Canadian entry lever license (not hard at all) you'd be able to talk all over the world from your truck -- LEGALLY.

Actually there ought to be between 70 and 80 observable sun spots, and it looks as though there are only 6 or 7. This has been the least active solar maximum since the 1800's. Whether or not it will have any impact on climate is currently up for debate, but it sure will be interesting to observe during the next 20 years.

SFI (Solar Flux Index) has been over a 100 for almost two years and was 180 in April and 160 last week.  Not the 250+ SFI's of the cycle in the 1970's but sure as HECK no Maunder Minimum.  Do your own research, do your own thinking.  Anyone who says that the sun is recently (the last 2 years) inactive is talking out of their lowest set of cheeks.  Hilarious...I saw numerous "scientific" doom & gloom articles in 2008, 2009, and 2010 about another ice age and another Maunder(esque) Minimum.  You see how wrong they were as well.  Worked Rodriguez Isl, Madagascar, and Seychelles with 15 watts and a wire antenna all with big signals both ways on 21 mHZ.  Just one of the many HF bands that would be church cemetery dead if those "scientific" articles were correct.

No one said anything about an ice age, simply that this solar maximum is weaker than normal.

Plus I find it kind of funny because some looney tunes types thought that the world was going to end with this solar maximum and the Mayan calendar crap, like a giant CME was going to fry us all LOL.

Cool post GHI. I love anything to do with the astro sciences. Carl Sagan was a treasure lost. Thankfully he mentored some of the brightest minds in his field.   I still miss AKWabs pics he use to post.

I was wrong, instead of 70 sunspots there ought to be 150. We are currently 14 months past the solar maximum and from what I have read there is generally more sunspot activity during a typical solar "Minimum" then we are currently experiencing just past the maximum. Whether or not it means anything I do not know, but I reckon we'll find out soon enough. I will be up in far norther. Michigan for a Month and I sure do hope for a light show.
