Open canopy/release control key
« on: November 05, 2014, 09:09:56 PM »
This does not have to apply to all the AH planes, but maybe could there be a control key for planes to open or release their canopies for planes for the pilots to bail out. In specifics, maybe for planes like the 51D, the 47-D25-N models, late war Spitfires(maybe even the early models if I'm not mistaken), basically any aircraft that was able to give the pilot time and space to get out. I don't think it was just the Allied planes with the bubble canopies and such, I think there were some Axis planes too that were able to release them: the 109s(I think), the Ki's(Probably the 43 and 84, maybe even the Niki too... :headscratch:)

How many planes did have the ability to do that?, I'm not sure. But I just think it'd be a bit cool to add something like that.

What other aircraft were able to have those types of canopies though? :headscratch:

And there should be limitations on when the canopy can be opened.  IIRC in the P-38 the side windows being opened caused buffeting of tail surfaces as one example.  More than likely all the bubble canopy aircraft had a IAS limit for flight with the canopy open.

If there is an oil hit/leak it will most likely be more than obvious without opening the canopy/window.  Engine oil quantity, temp, and pressure gauges should provide pretty immediate indications.

He wants to be able to stick his head out and see around the windscreen that is covered with oil.  Of course then his face is going to be covered in oil also.  :)

Busted an oil cooler on the 182 once upon a time…..lots and lots of oil down the side of the airplane….I had no desire to have that on my face.
