Current Gaming Fare Opinion Questions
« on: November 12, 2014, 06:15:01 PM »
Since we are all here on the HTC board I will put forth that at least most of you have flown this game so my questions won't apply to AH.  My questions are for those who have PERSONALLY flown/subscribed/purchased OTHER similar games, making them qualified to reply.  If you have NOT participated in the other games please leave posting to those who have and can be objective.  Thank you.

Hi!

For those who have flown IL2 (in all or even only one RECENT ("White Cliffs of Dover"?) what is your overall impression?  I see youtube clips and it looks similar to AH, but less focus on your own instruments.  Multiplayer?   Is it fun?  How are the flight models as compared to RL?

For those who have flown DCS (with at least one plane, but even 1 or 2 purchased ones) what is your overall impression?  As a flight sim it looks top notch with a wide spread of planes from numerous eras.  I don't mind cracking a book or manual to learn something so that's not an issue.  The rather small "rooms" of players has to be a problem but if they had 500 player arenas would it be a totally different ballgame?  Does the player hosted mini-arenas open the door to code altering like that has been done before in other games?  Does the cost seem to weed out possible unfriendly elements?  Flight models?

Thank you in advance.

My DCS experience is ONLY with Blackshark, so I cannot comment on fixed wing.

As far as sims go, Blackshark is an electronic orgasm. I'm a sucker for realism. I want things as real as it possible gets, especially for flight sims. Blackshark's FM was fantastic, as were the controls, in that if you spend enough time on it, flying an actual helicopter feels very familiar and easy (I'm speaking from experience in this too).

It's not just reading a bit to learn though. You need to print actual checklists, and having a kneeboard helps (I wish I was joking).

I've never tried the multiplayer, but the single player campaigns were more than enough to keep me interested.

Bottom line, would I buy another DCS product? In a heartbeat.

How do you control the helicopters? What do you use for a collective?

I've flown a little bit of il2 with the popular mod. Didn't really see any other players on the servers, it was too much for my computer and if I recall the view system wasn't as good as ah. Having to fuss with cowl flaps and the like with a keyboard doesn't suspend my disbelief but instead feels tedious, maybe with a fancy sim pit with real switches and levers it would be better. Also tried rise of flight which is pretty but the views just don't work for me like ah.

Your OP sort of has the issue written right into it.  For games like CLoD or the new Battle of Stalingrad, or the DCS series, to have 500 people, IS the entire issue right there.  According to HT, who I believe is 100% right, and knows more than any of us here, making a sim with the level of detail and the way these other sims work, as well as having an environment large enough for 500 players, would require defense department levels of computing power.  It's sort of one or the other, at least that's how it's been explained to me.

That said, there IS a lot of gaming/fun value to be had in these other types of games/sims.  They certainly are NOT the AH experience, but for smaller group multiplayer or single player, they can be fantastic.  I have pretty much all the DCS, and they are complex enough that I'm only now just getting to the A10C module after flying BS and FC3 for a year now, as well as messing about with the 1/2 done F86 and the excellent Mig21.  They are more the thinking man's type of sim, what everyone dreamed of someday having back in the Microprose flight sim days.  Don't get me wrong, the multiplayer can be great, I'll post some links to some FC3 multi player squad videos at the bottom.  FC3 is a great way to start, as it isn't quite as complex as the other modules.  That said, the F15C stand alone module comes free with FC3, and has a little more complexity, FM, avionics, and such put into it.  Good news is that they did the same thing with the SU27 just days ago, and included it as a free upgrade to FC3 owners, so you don't need to buy the F15C or SU27 modules if you buy FC3 now, which again, makes it by far the best starting up module IMO.

CloD and BoS are sort of a middle ground, not quite as complex as some of the DCS modules, but more so than AH.  So far as the flight models, I'm the wrong person to ask, but I would say just by feel, look, and experience, that they are reasonably close to what AH offers, close enough for the non pilot gamer like myself to be happy.  There is a large community of multiplayer people, but it isn't nearly the AH experience as stated already, but it can still be alright for a diversion.  Personally, I like them for small multi, as in 2v2 or you and a good pal playing vs the computer AI or whatever.  The single player campaigns are good as well IMO, although not without controversy right now with BoS what with their unlock goofiness, but even still, it's pretty good.

One thing you should check out is Falcom BMS.  If you can get a hold of an old original copy of Falcon (easy and cheap), the BMS is free, and it's insane IMO, even more complex than DCS, with a HUGE community to help you (easy to find help videos on Youtube for example and such).  The dynamic campaign - there is still nothing out there like it, and you can fight in several wars in different times and places, and have yourself a months or year long game on the strat end vs the AI.  The graphics are dated - it's a lot like AH in same ways, in that the gameplay, idea, and original concept are SO good that 16 years later it's still the only game in town for some stuff, and very popular.

Make sure to put these in 1080p on youtube.  Do some searching of your own as well, there are tons of DCS, CloD, and BoS vids out there.

Falcon 4 (basic) picked up my joystick immediately, but IL2 CoD not.

Anyone know how to get a joystick to be recognized by Cod?    Seems like alchemy.    Don't understand why it's so insanely difficult.

Any help appreciated.

Last time I tried COD with the mod there was all of one server with any people on it and IT required a password to get on it. Honestly Ive had enough of IL2s shenanigans. I know its a mod but it wouldnt have even been needed if the original game didnt totally suck.

Now they hose thousands out of $100 apiece for BOS and still find a way to screw up that release with moronic ideas like the unlocks.

It cant be easy to take a perfectly good idea and wreck it time and again.

Any way to get the joystick working on CoD?

What is BOS?
