the glowing orange everywhere gets to me somethimes lol, I've reduced the intensity in the functions menu but its still annoying.

There is a way of changing the colours which a lot of people have been doing - http://arkku.com/elite/hud_editor/  I've even seen screenshots/youtube videos featured in the weekly newsletter from Frontier so presumably it's acceptable to them....  :)  It can apparently have a weird affect on the Galaxy Map colours, but could be worth experimenting.  I've left mine as so far I like the orange and it doesn't feel right to change it.

Anyone taking part in the galactic exploration mission?

I'm a member of The First Great Expedition and hope to be exploring with them.  As a kickstarter backer, my starting ship is the Cobra III and I had an option to start out as an Explorer, with the Cobra already kitted out for long distance exploration.  I have since made some upgrades to improve it even more.  Unfortunately, I am probably going to miss some of the first exploration runs which coincide with the frames of the upcoming scenario.....

Another thing, take some time and get your controls set up so you can access your right and left user interface screens.  Last thing, realize that this is no instant gratification phone game.

I beg to differ, HOTAS + Rift = instant gratification   :devil

They smell especially there, at least if you fart inside a spaceship.

Farts freeze up in space. So it shows up in crystals.
