Space Engine Exploration Simulator (many images)
« on: December 18, 2014, 11:13:17 PM »
Has anyone played around with this? It's really quite awesome.

http://en.spaceengine.org/load/core/spaceengine_0971/2-1-0-18 - d/l for free here

What it is in a nutshell is a 3D map of known space that you can explore for eternity and never even get close to finding everything. Here are some screen shots I took in the first few hours of playing with this.

A brief moment as Io partially eclipses Jupiter's giant red storm

Sol distorted by Saturn's rings

Random alien planets I chanced upon while cruising the galaxies

Binary system in a massive globular cluster

Sunrise on a scorched planet orbiting those two stars

Binary orange giant system

Another binary system with a gas giant in orbit

I have to stop posting pics now or the thread will go on endlessly. This is well worth downloading for anyone interested in this sort of thing. It's FREE.

And I don't know much, but I do know this. With a golden heart comes a rebel fist.

yes, yes it is!

but this is a different thing, this is an encyclopaedia of actual reality mapped in accurately in 3D. Not really a game.

Cool stuff.

Don't deny it -- some of those landscapes had you thinking about the cliff diving or a freefall... :)

haha! even getting out of the shower or making a bacon sandwich makes me think of freefall :P

That's pretty cool Dee, what a great age of computing we live in. Still new enough to amaze us but developed enough to be so stunning. In 100 years people will take it all for granted.

As far as I am aware, Vanilla KSP doesn't let you travel around beyond Kerbal home system.  I know there are MODs that allow you to do this to an extent, but from what I've seen, not on this scale. :headscratch:

Awesome pics!  More please.

"Mos Eisley spaceport. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy."

I read that in Alec Guiness' voice.
"Then out spake brave Horatius, the Captain of the gate:
To every man upon this earth, death cometh soon or late.
And how can man die better, than facing fearful odds.
For the ashes of his fathers and the temples of his Gods."
