That's good work.

Probably a good thing I can't load SH3 on my new computer...
... missions were to be met by the commitment of alerted swarms of fighters, composed of Me 109's and Fw 190's, that were strategically based to protect industrial installations. The inferior capabilities of these fighters against the Mosquitoes made this a hopeless and uneconomical effort. 1.JD KTB

First thing I did when I got my new PC. Even bought a used standard format monitor to play it on. :)

I might get SH4 once I finish my ultimate campaign in SH3. I could never finish a real campaign until I got my new PC a few years back. Still working on that as we speak.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

I understand the feeling, however I became seriously addicted to SH3. Getting around to the front of that convoy before dawn and sinking the tankers I'd seen earlier became more important than real life.

I have so many games that get no attention.  I have at least a dozen I've bought on Steam in the last year that I haven't played more than a couple hours.  The new Arma, Rome 2, etc etc.  Silent Hunter 5 is in that pile, I tried it for a few hours when I first got it, then started looking up all the problems I was having, read about all the issues others had with it online, and just dropped it.

I'm still looking for "that" sub sim to play.  Silent Service 1 was the entire reason I bought a Commodore 64 way back when.  Silent Service 2 was a large reason I then bought an Amiga (Jetfighter as well, and so on).  Watching vids and these pics really make me want to play a sub sim again.  I have Dangerous Waters (again, that list of 12+ games), and it supposedly is great for modern sub sim stuff, but I really want the best WW2 option out there.  Is Silent Hunter 4 still it?  Inquiring mind wishes to know.

It is for me. Obviously personal opinion. Based on:

1. When it comes to submarine sims, I'm a U.S. Fleet Boat fan. I never quite got into the U-Boat thing (again, preference).

2. The SubSim community supports the product and players have come up with amazing mods (all without source code, mind you).

3. Between the aforementioned mods offering tweaked graphics and sounds that are as accurate as they can possibly mimic, the immersion level is quite good (short of installing a periscope in your den and getting the neighbor to lob depth charges from next door). There are skins, gramophone and radio sound packs that give you, quite literally, hours and hours of between run entertainment while dealing with the 'mundane' duties of running your boat, crew that you interact with (limited) and campaigns with realism levels that run from 'easy' (depending on your definition) to extremely hard (doubt it would fall out of anyone's definition).

I openly support this game amongst my friends here since it's really good and I don't see it as a competitive threat to AH (each game fills a niche and I love them both).

I surely love the radar when that upgrade becomes available as the campaign progresses.

The graphics never fail to please (if you don't encounter glitches from 'mod soup' - be careful).

I recommend not letting yourself get caught on the surface by patrol planes.

Occasionally, you make get lucky manning the AA, though (on less realistic settings maybe you'll survive more oft than not).

Here's one of those custom skins.

The Japanese are relentless.

I am considering purchasing SH4 and getting it up to speed with mods.

I am a member of subsim, you gotta link to a guide for installing must-have mods? Is there like an ulitmate mod like GWX3.0?

While I've played around with many, to be honest, I am perfectly happy to run just one mega-mod - Trigger Maru Overhauled (ver 2.5).

It's weird that SH5 seems to have gone backwards in graphics and realism. I guess they're just piggybagging on the brand and code cheap.

SH4, out of the box (vanilla), isn't as good as it could have been, either (hence all the modding by the community). Discovering Subsim before I bought SH4 was lucky. (Well, I actually found he community before there was an SH4.)

I have both 3 and 4, though it appears that I no longer have access to the uboat expansion for 4. I'm thinking of getting back into some subbing for a while.

I wonder though, why do some of you like SH4 better than 3? I played 3 more than I did 4 mostly because I couldn't stand a lot of the changes made to the interface. I was also very confused with the crew management, and the torpedo solution method didn't work as well as some of the mods I had for 3 (or so I remember).

I think I remember that SH4 had more varied missions like rescuing downed pilots and such, but I don't think I ever encountered any in my time with it. Please tell me more about this if you can. :)
