I'm disappointed to see the lancaster at the top of the GV killing list.

I'm disappointed to see the lancaster at the top of the GV killing list.

First, it's not a GV killing list, but a FLAK killing list. In a GV killing list the Lancaster would drop back to rank 6, far behind planes like the A-20, which has twice as many vehicle kills.

Second: The high relative number of Wirbelwind and Ostwind kills results from the way the Lancaster encounters them: By attacking bases (most notably vehicle bases) and towns. Flaks are inbound to flatten the vehicle hangars, half a dozen WW's roll out. The WW at the maproom getting killed by a Lancaster carpet bombing the town.

In AH, Lancasters are actually rarely hunting the battlefield for individual targets like tanks.

Thanks for clearing that up Snail.

I was expecting the P-47 and spit 16  to be near the top of the list.  I think both are fantastic for killing vehicles, especially flaks.

Wirbles are easy to kill with a bomb.  I do target tanks when friendly ground is there but it feels unethical when I do it.

After that, there are 48 additional planes on the list.  The much whined about Lancaster, comes in near the bottom with only 2 kills and the A-20 has 7.

Total kills are 799 Ostwinds and 901 Wirbelwinds.  None were killed with a ground vehicle. 

The best single performance was in Tour 90, when the Ki-84 killed 85 Ostwinds for only 16 deaths - not too shabby in the days of LTAR.
