DFC...... Distinguished Flying Cross issued to RAF Commissioned Officer Pilots of note. Elite in as much they were of the English upper classes.
DFM....... Distinguished Flying Medal issued to RAF non commissioned Officer Pilots of note. The same award as the DFC but issued to the less elite pilots from the English working classes and of course those pilots who had risen through the ranks from Commonwealth and Colonial countries.
It gave rise the phrase
DFC ......they Don't F'ing Care
DFM.......they Don't F'ing Matter.
