You could've probably saved yourself a headach for the next couple of weeks by giving them a vacation as well. :D

Wasn't this topic about making early war free to lure new players.    Isn't rule 7 about cheating....this topic must have really morphed.

free for early war might work. then when they see 200 people in late war they might pay. if they pay, we may get new maps

I don't think we'll have the same arena structure with the new version as we have now.  I do not expect to see arenas like the early/mid-war arenas, instead those will be replaced by arenas using staged missions in either PvE or PvP flavor.  I do see the main arena (Late War) remaining in its current state but won't be the primary focus of development.

Forcing split arenas now would be a death knell for the game. There are not enough players most of the time now to get the arena going. You have to have a certain number of players for the arena to start to be a decent playground.

Forcing players to choose between PvE or PvP, or a staged mission arena, or the sandbox will cut numbers even more per arena.

I don't see why those other types of play couldn't be incorporated into the main arena. It's just coading after all. You don't HAVE to join a staged mission, but defending against one might add to the fun. Any PvE or PvP could just be a payment choice. Limited play to what ever the payment scales are. $15 full blown account.

More options payment wise as well as game play wise will only help the game, but splitting it over a number of arenas will kill it.

The way I see it, there isn't a forced split of the arenas, just like how it is currently.

How is providing choices for a player forcing them to choose?  Players will still have the option of flying in the main arena in its current format but will have other arenas if they wish to engage in PvE missions or PvP matches, with such objectives like Capture the Flag (or base in this case), team death match, staged PvP missions, etc.

Because the move towards gaming habits is quick action, something the PvE and PvP arenas bring to the table and gives the player more playing options.

Adding different payment options isn't going to bring in the crowds if there is nothing to provide the "hook" to keep them here, giving them options in addition to changes to the game play and with the new graphics will provide that "hook" to hopefully compel the new player to stick around.

People have asked why the media blitz on Canadian TV during some show about aces/dogfighting didn't pan out.  My guess the reason that media campaign failed was that there wasn't anything to compel the potential customer to check out the game, let alone stick around if they did.  There needs to be a change to the game, not a variation of the same old thing.

I quite agree.  Perhaps a series of increasingly more challenging staged missions to help prepare a new player for the PvP of the main arenas would be one approach.  Maybe even with AH Training Corp guys doing ride-alongs.

In any event, continuing to club baby seals is not going to help attract and keep new players.

By providing choices for a players you are forcing them to choose. If they are not choosing then what is the point of having choices?

So you change one arena to a PvP arena, quick action. Lets call it "Fighter Town"  :devil Now you pull most of the fighter jocks out of the main arena. The same could be said for a GV backed version as well. You have now split the arena and dropped an already low player count even lower.

I agree the game MUST change or it is doomed. IN the old days it was the history that was the hook. Us old timers loved to pretend we were WWII pilots fighting for our country. The game evolved around that. As more and more options for the "WAR" came into the game more and more players "played" the game. By that they looked for ways to game the game and work around the learning curve. After all why spend hundreds of hours learning to be good at fighting and bombing when if you bring 50 of your closest friends it becomes more of "close enough".

What the hook should be now, I really don't know. The game has many options of ways to play but building a mission around a number of factors with timing and twists involved to confound the enemy doesn't hold a candle to the smash and grab game play we have now. Score is no hook as it is way to easy to tweak. Rank, same thing. Notoriety, name on the web page. well we have all seen how that works out.

The old "you can't please all the people all the time" comes into play big time here. What hooks me may boor the hell out of the next guy.

While I don't know exactly how HTC plans to use the mission system, I do know how I used it in the AvA and began to use it in the "playground" arena.

The system just never got quite finished enough for us to see if we could build a following with it, but we had gotten to the point that with terrain building, custom objects and missions, we could put out some heavy eye candy, content filled stuff.

I believe that an arena with repeating historical missions will be a draw for low number players, new players and even whole squads for practice.

One of the coolest things is to have AI bomber formations with escorts and then interceptors on the other side.

The AI escort and interceptor slots are often the first to get replaced with humans and AI bomber formations don't seem to cause the same heartburn as AI fighters.

The ones we already have are already 2/3 AI anyway.
