Been stated before:

Don't give me a P-39.
The engine is mounted behind.
They'll tumble and spin and auger you in,
Don't give me a P-39.

There are a LOT of planes I can not fly.

Some days I feel as if I am on as an act of charity - a target that no one can miss.  I mean how else are those guys going to land all those kills I ask myself. :lol :lol :lol

The tail of the P-39 gets shot off easier than any other plane I have spent time in the fighter mode.  Seems to be the weakness in a 39

I killed a 39 in FSO with a Ki 43 for this exact reason. The vertical stab popped off with just a couple of hits.

The Russkies used them because they were readily available.

3 of the top 5 (and 6 of the top 10) Soviet aces flew the P-39.  And that despite the Soviets having only 5000 P-39's, vs. 23,000 Yak-7/9/3's and 16,000 La-5/7's.

Anyone who thinks that the P-39 is ugly has no talent for aesthetics and should flee ashamedly from any discussions thereof.  ;)
