I just cannot believe how much better the ground combat is in War Thunder. The damage modelling, the graphics, the overall fun aspect makes Aces High look like a 15 year old game...oh wait...it is...lol.

As for the OP:

Yes and no.

No.  You just have this tiny little bitty THING you call a map to play around in.  What I love about Aces High in this regard is that if I felt like it, I could up a tank and drive 6 sectors in one direction (to a strat for example), and shell the hell out of it.  Sure, it would take me like 12 hours to do it, but I can do it. :)

Yes.  In AH, if you pen, you win.  It seems that is all you need to do, penetrate the armor.  Doesn't matter where it's penetrated, just so long as it is.  In War Thunder, unless you hit critical parts of the tank with a penetrating shot,  you are in trouble.

Both bring forth things I like.  Now if AH would adopt a damage system equal to what War Thunder has?  GG  :)

In War Thunder, unless you hit critical parts of the tank with a penetrating shot,  you are in trouble.

Even without penetration the enemy crew (gunner/loader ) may fall unconscious for several seconds or get wounded buy the armor's splinters from a near-penetrating shot. In this case you have a good chance to place a second shot on the target without retaliation.

Big High Explosive shells (from SU-152 for example) may destroy enemy tank instantly causing detonation of the ammunition inside the tank (especially if you hit the turret near ammunition compartment).

The only strange thing  I saw so far is when a high-velocity AP round hits something light on the roof of the turret (like observation device/hatch) and then ricochets inside the turret causing enormous damage (usually several ricochets inside the tank that destroy pretty much everything).
