Aces High Squad Ring - feedback wanted
« on: March 06, 2015, 12:43:13 PM »
In the thread about the 10 oldest squads in Aces High, I thought it would be cool to make a "cover flow" type page that showed all the squads' logos and has links to their webpages.   I poked around and found some free Flash applications that allowed me to modify them to do that - the one I used is called flShow and its a Flash-based carousel.  I either grabbed a squad's artwork off its webpage or made up my own if I couldn't find any for the squad, same as I did on the timeline I made earlier.  I have a lot more than 10 squads, my criteria having evolved into active squads more than 10 years old, with at least a handful of members and hopefully a web presence in the form of a squad website.

I mocked this up as if its part of HTCs website, just to see what it would look like.   Mostly I just wanted to see if I could do it.    You can control the vertical orientation, direction and speed of the rotation of the carousel with your mouse.    Moving the mouse to either edge of the screen increases the rotational speed; centering it stops the rotation.  Moving the mouse up and down changes your viewing angle.

EDIT:  You can click on the squad's logo and if the squad has a webpage, it will link to it in a new window.   If this isn't working, you may need to clear your browser's cache and close and restart the browser...

What do you guys think?   Too much time on my hands?    Squad logos really interest me.  My favorites are the winged pig of Pigs on the Wing, "Animal" from the Army of Muppets, and of course Walt Disney's original Flying Tiger logo.   But there is a lot of talent and imagination out there - Duxford Wing's "Beckoning Death" skeleton, the "Menacing Ferrets, and LLv34's black crow for example.  I had some fun working with these images.   I hope squads stay alive and well for a long time in AH.

LOL, do we have a webpage?

I had to limit the number of squads, so I chose 10 years as a cut off point.   Otherwise the ring I think would get too big.   I still have a few squads to add like the FUBARS, Unforgiven, Birds of Prey, Blue Knights, Specialists, Avengers, Nazgul, Sick Puppies, Hellhounds.   But if they don't have a website I'm not sure about what kind of graphic to use, and no webpage to link to.  I was just excited to get it to a point where I could show it to see what people thought about it.

The links to webpages happen so FAST. Not sure why that is, maybe its preloading the link?

Thanks!   Hellhounds are in there now, hgtonyvi.   I found a real Hellhound squad patch from a Marine squadron.

I've added a few new squads; if you don't see the them, try deleting your cache and closing and restarting your browser.

Thank you, Waystin2.  Your pig image just cracks me up.  He just looks so happy and dumb flying around that carousel!

I've been at it since early this morning, trying to finish up to get it in a condition to show you guys, and I think my eyes are mow playing tricks on me.  I swear that black crow from LLv34 - his head turns and keeps looking at me as he rotates out of view.   Gahh!

... and LLv34's black crow for example.  ...

It's an eagle!  :furious   :D

The official emblem of the historical Lentolaivue 34, The Eagle Fledgling, or "Mace Crow" as it was affectionately called, was designed by one of the squadron pilots Lasse Lehtinen.  There were several versions of it painted on rudders.  Here's a couple, first one during the war, the second after the war (swastikas were changed to roundels post-WW2).

Nice work Oboe!  :aok

Not sure how the flash portion is set up, but  if you resize the ring to half the width, and half the height you could then fit 4 "rings" in the same space and then you could add more patches.

Looks pretty cool tho. Skuzzy doesn't like flash because I guess it's easy to hide nasty payload in it. I'm surprised that my training tutorials are still up on the trainers site.

Well done!  :rock

Thanks guys!

An eagle?!  Of course, that makes more sense!    What I like about the "Mace Crow", is that for such a simple drawing, it seems to have a personality.  It does not look lifeless.   Must be the eyes...

Fugi, wouldn't ya know it abt Flash?   There were other options but many involved keeping the images on Picasa, and I try to stay away from things Google because I don't want GoogleUpdater running on my machine. Another process I don't need.  This one seemed to have the best features, plus you could link the images to web pages.    I had not realized Flash could be used as a payloader and be a security risk.

Very cool!
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!
