second video card and monitor.
« on: March 10, 2015, 10:33:12 AM »
I have a rig with

ASRock Z77 Extreme4 LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard and a GIGABYTE GV-R787OC-2GD Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB 256-bit GPU.

I am thinking of adding a second monitor, which may be used for the game.   My question is do I need to buy the exact GPU to play the game?   Or similar?   Or even better?

Thx

You don't need to buy anything. Just plug your second monitor in the card.

Two monitors is not a good solution for games though. I reckon you're going to use dual monitors for desktop work?

Yeah....mostly for whatever I've got going on.   Thanks...   I think I'll get a dvi to hdmi cable for the second monitor.

So when I'm playing the game in my primary monitor, the second monitor closes all windows and displays the desktop.  Is there a check box somewhere I need to tick off to allow me to wok in the second screen while the game is on the primary monitor?

Nope. You have to ALT/TAB out of the game to use the other monitor..... sucks don't it?

HTC has decided they won't run their game in window mode so you can't just click from one to the other.

I bought this bigger better monitor B286HK.  My frame rate went from a steady 60fps to the mid 20s.

video resolution is now set at 3840x2160

Well going from I assume 1080p to 4K will hurt your frame rate drastically unless you have a good card to support it. You are doubling your resolution and I'm not sure the 7870 can handle that.

Actually quadrupling in resolution. 4k monitors are too heavy for a reasonably priced gaming computer. You have to have two premium cards.

Ok....Thanks Ripley.   I obviously didn't think this through enough.   What are my options?   When you say two premium cards would that mean sh-canning the 7870 or could I buy a card to run in tandem? And would both cards actually connect at the same time?  Thank You.

Okay....after some actual research this monitor needs to go back.   I'm now in the market for a new IPS monitor.   Anyone got a recommendation?   I want to be in the 29 inch range.
