I think Kalispell and Butt are nice towns if you wanted to live near a town. Kalispell is near some of the most breath taking vistas you'll ever see.

Yup, Kalispell / Flathead Valley are among the most beautiful places in the whole world to live, sadly folks have found out about that and as a result Kalispell has the most expensive housing market in the state. 

Butte on the other hand is cheap... but it's a pretty dumpy town.  Just think of all those disgusting 'People of Wal-Mart' pictures... that's pretty representative of the population of Butte.  If you wanna see what I mean, if you drive through Butte on I-15, follow the exit that points you towards "Historic District" or something like that.  Basically the 'historic district' is a dump of old graffitied, falling down buildings that nobody is willing to fix/maintain complete with drunk folks passed out in the gutter.  Oh... and I went to Butte on St. Paddy's day once, the whole of downtown was pretty much one big drunken bar fight.  Also as you drive past notice the giant hole in the ground that was once the Silverbow mine.  Rather then fill it in and reclaim the land when the mine shut down like responsible mining companies do... they just left it as a giant hole in the ground, let if partially fill with ground water (which probably contaminates the water supply) and stuck up a 'Point of Interest' interpretive sign on the highway.

Of the 'big' cities in MT, I'd have no problem living in Bozeman, Missoula, Helena, Billings, Kalispell or Great Falls.  But I wouldn't want to live in Butte.

Unless you're set on Montana, or you're going there for work I suggest you consider northern Idaho. It's a better place to live in almost every way. Basically the same scenery but without the social problems and not too distant from the comforts of civilization, ie. hospitals, ems, airports. And the weather is marginally better.

We have like 3 seasons here in Fairbanks Alaska. Lol. We hit -40 to -50 in the winter.

I googled average temps last year in Helena Montana and they never dipped below 0

Im from Flathead county. It's a great place but you definitely need a hobby in the winter months. Sometimes you dont see the sun for awhile and it can get quite depressing.  It took a bit to get used to rain in winter also.

Gman has it nailed about Montana. Both him and I live in cowtown, just a couple hours north of the Montana border.  Pretty place, especially Kalispell. Great Falls is nice too - big National Guard presence and an Airforce base. Was cool to see F-16's constantly fly in and out of that airport.

Hey Kilz,  I've been living in the Big Belt Mountains a bit East of Helena for about 25 years, and love it here.  If you enjoy outdoors activities, it's a paradise.  The Helena area is great for mountain biking, hiking, fishing and hunting.  If you enjoy hunting I suspect it's hard to find a better place in the lower 48 for generously long seasons and a wide variety of hunting opportunities.  Good luck with your new job opportunity!

If I ask a serious question from those who know and live in Montana will I get a serious reply? Let’s see and as this thread has been moved we’ll see how we go. That is, serious people have hung on and contributed. And I’ve been playing AH for about 7 years so whilst I am a geek, I’m no loon. Read on and work with me on this. And by the way, your wives may have to get involved.

I live in Western Australia where it’s always mild weather and we are close to the beach and the seasons are reverse about from USA. i.e. Christmas is always from 86 to 104 degrees (using Fahrenheit now). It’s hot and dry, everyone speaks English and although we drive on the other side of the road we’re pretty much like you. I also live on a golf course and surf as well at a beach 25 minutes away. We have almost everything except guns and Walmart.

Unfortunately for me I also like snowboarding and my wife skiing which isn’t that good because I don’t think it has ever snowed in Perth…..ever. To overcome this we go to New Zealand and have property there to ski, but that’s only in season (April to September). We've also been to China, but I have a thought. If it goes anywhere so be it. If not, it doesn't.

I am exploring the possibility of a “house swap” with someone who has a snow field close by and have made enquiries through the suitable web sites. But I thought (that’s not true, my wife suggested it) that I would try here as well and of course there is an Aces High set-up in situ. And we’re meant to be a community. One that is getting smaller, but still exists.

If you’ve got this far here are the main bullet points;
•   We’re in our 40’s and 50’s and there won’t be any children from our end (they’ve grown up and we’re SKIing (Spending Kids Inheritance). Our home however has 4 bedrooms and is about a mile from a small plane airport as well as being on a golf course (18 holes, public).
•   Of course it has all the gear, big TV, air conditioning etc. etc.
•   It’s got to be post Christmas and 2016/2017, preferably early January. I plan to go to Washington and see a president sworn in.
•   It’s a long haul. About 40 hours total travel time. 3 weeks is probably the minimum with that amount of travel.
•   We’re professionals. That’s put in so you can be assured I'm not either joking or unable to follow through.

Pros; beautiful country, amazing access to recreational activities and the great outdoors, friendly people.

Cons; there is literally nothing between towns, if you don't like the sense of isolation, living in a town is mandatory. Winters are god awful. If in not in the city, I recommend a beefy 4wd truck, and for God's sake don't leave the garage without chains.

The people tend to be very stereotypical. Small town bumpkins that like to gossip, or if they're feeling worldly, talk about the shortcomings of the Democratic party without really understanding what they're saying. They also tend to be ignorant on many issues; this is not to say they are dumb or unintelligent, only that they have the world view one would expect from growing up in a small town in a conservative state.


Also, when I lived there, mormans were essentially invading the state, so be careful who you badmouth.
