ARMA3
« on: April 07, 2015, 02:25:00 PM »
Can I get you guys' impressions of ARMA 3?   I don't have the game and never have played it, but have been following Jester814's YouTube videos of his gameplay - it just seems very, very realistic to me, especially the way this realism unit plays the game - the radio traffic seems completely authentic to me.

If any of you can tell what what "break" and "index index index" mean in radio lingo I'd appreciate it.

It is good game.. Like all huge open world type simulators it does have its quirks. But for the most part I enjoy it.
It is one of the other games I really enjoy...   Hit me and Mar up sometime and we play with you.

I've really been getting into DUWS lately (Dynamic Universal War System).  It's available as steam content for Arma3.  The newest version runs with expanded US and Russian forces which return Arma3 to a more realistic present simulation than the silly weapons and vehicles BI seem to think we'll all be using in 2035....or whenever it's supposed to be set.

Break means a pause in the transmission but Jester uses it even when he's in full flow. It's really not as easy as it looks though, trying to coordinate 50+ guys while under fire will definitely lead to deviation of "proper radio protocol."

"Index index index" was probably code for mission complete, or maybe even how successful the mission was.

I did some training with United Operations in arma 2 but unfortunately I didn't have the motivation to stick with them. I prefer to have it more relaxed with 3rd person, hud info, etc. Arma 3 is much much better than arma 2 co IMO. I don't mind the fantasy weapons at all, if it shoots I can use it, but I have been experimenting with mods that do add real life weapons. Most of the mods I look for are what Jester's guys use (in his video descriptions). I use Play With Six to download and install all but RHS Escalation (comes in 2 parts, ruskie stuff and 'murican stuff).

So oboe, I'll tell you this much: it is indeed very realistic, so much so that you pretty much have to use those real life tactics to stay alive. It is an awesome sandbox though, so finding a unit like the 506th isn't your only option. If you want, you are more than welcome to join me and Condor (and eventually Rafe too) if you decide to get the game, and we can do some small random ops, watch the ai kill eachother, or spawn camp ourselves all day. :lol I'll try my best to keep it realistic and show you what I know.

How accurate is the model? I've been neck deep in DCS lately, but transport helos are pretty much broken there, and I'd love to do some air ops somewhere...

A new DLC came out for ARMA3 today, new weapons, as well as a "marksman" upgrade to all current weapons, meaning you can use ledges and terrain and other objects to lean and balance your weapons on for stability.  Whole bunch of stuff added, I'm just going through it all now.

OP, buy it, it's a great game/time killer.

It's not a flight sim by any stretch of the imagination.

Arma 3's advanced helicopter flight model is great, almost as good as DCS's. If you want some button pushing though you'll be out of luck, vehicle systems are greatly simplified. There are commands for raising/lowering the gear and turning on the lights, but not much else.

Yup.

You can do some interesting things like using a Chinook to lift an SDV with 4 divers aboard, but it's all middle mouse button menu driven.
