Bare metal Ki.61
« on: April 10, 2015, 01:43:25 AM »
Really not a bad looking bird, considering the age of the model - it was added to AH back before there were bmp or material files, or anything.  Bare metal seems to suit the Tony well I think.

My wife and I discuss cars and the colors their companies choose for them related to how well it shows the car's lines. Some cars shape looks horrible in dark colors. Then you see one in white or a lighter color and the shape and lines suddenly pop. Or the reverse.

That shape looks it's best in light colors. And a solid green is not bad either.

This aircraft model is so old it doesn't use a material file to control specularity.  So it must be hardcoded somewhere that the surface is shiny metal.  If you look at the green-painted Ki.61s, you'll see they are very reflective (which is not correct for flat paint).   So this baby was just born to fly bare.

The Ki.61 is very underused in AH.  It performs better than a P-40, and has a pair of cowl-mounted 20mm that are very effective in snap shots.  If you run into a scarily well-flown Ki.61 in the MA, its probably Tongs.   And you better have packed your 'chute!

Tongs is a great fight in that thing.

War Thunder has some insanely good skinners.  Look at the metal work in this one:

I wonder what size textures they use....and yours is not that far off. :aok

if you added more wear... stains.... and scratches.... all that little detail yours would be easily just as nice.

I'm sure that's higher res than AH's 1024^2. In fact I'd be incredibly surprised if it's a 256-color BMP file. AFAIK, most contemporary games are RGB DDS files.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

I have worked a lot with DDS (direct draw surfaces)

GIMP  has a DDS reader and converter came in handy when I was putting weapons into Skyrim. :rock

Looks damn good Oboe.  :rock

The Tony is a fantastic plane to use special events. I expect it's MA use to increase greatly after the model is updated, when many try out the plane and see that it's a fine fighter.

That looks really good Oboe, especially as its an AH1 shape.

I suspect if and when the Ki-61 is updated you'd get a little flurry of activity and then almost everyone would retreat back to their uberplane of choice. It getting used more or less than before would be down to things like any flight model changes or the view being more or less restrictive than before with the new cockpit art.

Greebo,

Have you found a well-flown Ki.61 to be a good match for the Hellcat?

I find the Ki-61 does well initially while the fight is fast. However the Hellcat's better flaps and good low speed rudder and elevator response give it the edge if I can draw the 61 into a slow scissors.
