bushes and trees
« on: April 29, 2015, 07:02:06 AM »
:airplane: Please remodel the game where we Rooks can shoot through bushes and trees and kill Bish, like they can us! I had Strga7 right in my sights yesterday and he was behind a bush, just a little bush at that! Fired 4 times at him, not a scratch on him and he turned his turret about 30 degrees and shot me through the same bush and killed me with one shot!
Now, I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but could someone explain how that happens? Its not the first time!
Is there a difference in shooting HE as opposed to AP through a bush? I am stumped!
Blue Skies and wind at my back and wish that for all!!!

Earl, I think this has happened to all of us. The other day, my tank was killed and I was behind a few trees and this was behind another line of trees.  It just seems like it's the same people that can do this magic shooting.

I can see AP having little to no trouble cutting through a bush or tree (though it's hitting power would be reduced, and dependent on gun size).  HE I can see detonating as a result, most of the time.

That being said, it's akin to your head in the sand.  Sure, you can't see them or see them clearly, but they can see you, or at least enough of you to land a hit.  I've knocked out tanks "through" tree's and bushes because a part of them that can result in a kill, was exposed to my shots.  Always assume you are exposed in some form or another.  I tend to avoid using trees and bushes as cover.  When I do use them, I always assume that I'm exposed enough to be hit.  It's a good idea to move after taking a shot, especially if you are using trees/bushes as cover.

Rule of thumb with armored operations: Movement is life! ...German school of thought during WWII was 3 rounds to be on target...Round 1 :...Stop, assess range Fire watch for strike of round begin moving...Round 2 Adjust range for viewed strike of 1st round and movement, stop, fire adjust if not on, move....Final adjust , stop, fire should be on target. This is how they were trained and after much of that training it was reduced as experience was gained.

As for shooting through bushes, neither AP nor HE should be much affected. Through tress both rounds would suffer with AP rounds deflecting or hitting with little or no KE due to hitting or skimming objects. He would most likely detonate at strike of tree depending on direction of the strike. AP rounds which were solid shot such as APCR, and the like used kinetic energy for penetration. Heat rounds use chemical energy imparted from shaped charge in round. The sabot used today is a KE round there is no explosives in the round. It is a dart and will fly straight and true and at constant velocity as long as there is KE in the round. Shooting through tress is not much of a problem with them. Since AP during WWII was fired at lower velocities you could get deflection for sure.

Hence earl, Fire a round and move! The only tank sitting still on the battle field is a dead tank or one that is being used as a pill box. Tanks are maneuver warefare to the extreme...

you could see his turret? then his turret wasnt behind the bush.

the same goes for when you think you're hidden because you can't see the other guy, but your hull is showing below a tree, etc.

Something else to remember: you can shoot through the very lowest branches of trees, through the very ends of hedges, and you can shoot anywhere through the smallest bush, i.e. the one that is short and you can drive through.

Earl its impossible to say anything without a film, from my tanking experience I am guessing your 4 shots were "bad" where his 1 shot was good. Here's an example - I had a young tanker ask me to break down a film of him to find out why he was hitting so many tanks and not destroying them in a Panther - I counted 22 hits of 40 - problem is at 800 yards a Panther should easily kill a Panzer IV. However he continued to get glancing shots, unless you nail a tank square on the armor, you won't penetrate. Another time he put 3 rounds through the drivers door of an M3, all three were ricochets.

I knew tankers that no matter what distant you "popped" your head out of, they would 1 shot your tank every time, I've been called a cheater a few dozen times because I could drive at full speed and hit targets on the move; let alone shot down P-47's trying to dive straight down on me to bomb me from a spawn (and I climb a hill and elevate my barrel straight up).

Shooting through a bush doesn't do anything, if even a PIECE of the tank is vulnerable on either end of a bush, a shell can penetrate a tank through it; problem is a piece of tank must be showing. I have shot pintle guns off tanks that were behind a bush, rarely ever got a kill unless I was elevated enough to shoot over the hill, through it however, not a chance.

I remember one occasion when a Tiger or King Tiger killed a Sherman hiding behind the building ... so much for that extra protection...
My ammo last for 6 Lancasters, or one Yak3.

:airplane: As I remember, I could only see just the top of his turret and I was firing through the bushs, so he had to kill me through the bushes to. He maybe saw a opening in the bushes, I don't know, but not the first time I have encountered this. I know that I am the worst GV'er in the game, but I do enjoy it from time to time.
